ในการจัดตั้งมหาวิทยาลัยวลัยลักษณ์ปี พ.ศ.2533 ได้กำหนดให้มีการพัฒนาพื้นที่ทั้งหมดของมหาวิทยาลัยให้เป็นแหล่งเรียนรู้ภายใต้ชื่อ “อุทยานการศึกษา” เพื่อเทอดพระเกียรติพระบาทสมเด็จ พระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดชมหาราช ในวโรกาสเฉลิมฉลองศิริราชสมบัติครบ 50 ปี “กาญจนาภิเษก” และสนองแนวพระราชดำริด้านสิ่งแวดล้อม การศึกษาวัฒนธรรม และการพัฒนาคุณภาพชีวิตของประชากร
