ลักษณะของปูหนุมาน กระดองมีรูปร่างค่อนข้างกลม ชายกระดองมีหนามแหลม มีขาเดิน 4 คู่ และก้ามหนีบ 1 คู่ ก้ามสั้นและแข็งแรงเหมาะกับการพับเข้าแนบชิดกับลำตัว พื้นกระดองมีสีเหลืองหรือตองอ่อนมีลวดลายสีม่วงเข้มอมดำอยู่ทั่วไปทั้งกระดอง ด้านล่างมีสีขาว ปลายขาเดินและกรรเชียงมีขอบสีขาว

ปูหนุมานอยู่ตามชายหาดพื้นท้องทรายมากกว่าอย่างอื่น ชอบอาศัยอยู่ในระดับที่น้ำทะเลขึ้นลงตามหาดทรายพบมากที่เกาะไผ่ เกาะคราม เกาะเสม็ด หาดสุรินทร์ สงขลา อ่าวไทยตอนนอกและแหลมญวน หาดปากเมง จ.ตรัง
