ในปี พ.ศ. 2450 เมืองร้อยเอ็ดได้รับการยกฐานะขึ้นเป็นบริเวณร้อยเอ็ด โดยแบ่งเขตการปกครองออกเป็น 5 เมือง คือ เมืองร้อยเอ็ด เมืองสุวรรณภูมิ เมืองมหาสารคาม เมืองกมลาไสย และเมืองกาฬสินธุ์ ในปี พ.ศ. 2453 สมเด็จฯ กรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพ เสนาบดีกระทรวงมหาดไทย ทรงเห็นด้วยกับข้อเสนอของเทศาภิบาลข้าหลวงมณฑลอีสานว่า ควรแยกมณฑลอีสานออกเป็น 2 มณฑล คือ มณฑลอุบลราชธานีและมณฑลร้อยเอ็ด พระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวก็ได้โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้เป็นไปตามที่เสนอ มณฑลร้อยเอ็ดจึงมีเขตปกครอง 3 จังหวัด คือ จังหวัดร้อยเอ็ด จังหวัดมหาสารคาม และจังหวัดกาฬสินธุ์

บึงพลาญชัย
