ถนนกาญจนาภิเษก หรือ ทางหลวงพิเศษหมายเลข ๙ (ถนนวงแหวนรอบนอกกรุงเทพมหานคร) เป็นถนนสายสำคัญที่มีเส้นทางเชื่อมต่อกันเป็นวงแหวนล้อมรอบตัวเมืองกรุงเทพมหานครนนทบุรี ปทุมธานี สมุทรปราการ และพระนครศรีอยุธยาด้วย ตลอดทั้งสายมีสะพานข้ามแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาทั้งหมด ๒ แห่ง ได้แก่ ด้านเหนือ คือ สะพานเชียงราก จังหวัดพระนครศรีอยุธยา และด้านใต้ คือ สะพานกาญจนาภิเษก จังหวัดสมุทรปราการ มีระยะทางทั้งหมดรวม ๑๖๘ กิโลเมตร เริ่มก่อสร้างครั้งแรกเมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๒๑ ในช่วงตลิ่งชัน-บางบัวทอง จนเสร็จสมบูรณ์ครบทุกส่วนในปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๕๐
