ความหมายของ “พลเมืองดี” ในวิถีชีวิตประชาธิปไตย
พจนานุกรมนักเรียนฉบับราชบัณฑิตยสถาน ได้ให้ความหมายของคำต่าง ๆ ดังนี้
“พลเมือง” หมายถึง ชาวเมือง ชาวประเทศ ประชาชน
“วิถี” หมายถึง สาย แนว ทาง ถนน
“ประชาธิปไตย” หมายถึง แบบการปกครองที่ถือมติปวงชนเป็นใหญ่
ดังนั้นคำว่า “พลเมืองดีในวิถีชีวิตประชาธิปไตย” จึงหมายถึง พลเมืองที่มีคุณลักษณะที่สำคัญ คือ เป็นผู้ที่ยึดมั่นในหลักศีลธรรมและคุณธรรมของศาสนา มีหลักการทางประชาธิปไตยในการดำรงชีวิต ปฏิบัติตนตามกฎหมายดำรงตนเป็นประโยชน์ต่อสังคม โดยมีการช่วยเหลือเกื้อกูลกันอันจะก่อให้เกิดการพัฒนาสังคมและประเทศชาติให้เป็นสังคมและประเทศประชาธิปไตยอย่างแท้จริงหลักการทางประชาธิปไตย
หลักการทางประชาธิปไตยที่สำคัญที่สุด ได้แก่
1) หลักอำนาจอธิปไตยเป็นของประชาชน หมายถึง ประชาชนเป็นเจ้าของ อำนาจสูงสุดในการปกครองรัฐ

3) หลักนิติธรรม หมายถึง การใช้หลักกฎหมายเป็นกฎเกณฑ์การอยู่ร่วมกัน เพื่อความสงบสุขของสังคม
4) หลักเหตุผล หมายถึง การใช้เหตุผลที่ถูกต้องในการตัดสินหรือยุติปัญหาในสังคม
5) หลักการถือเสียงข้างมาก หมายถึง การลงมติโดยยอมรับเสียงส่วนใหญ่ในสังคมประชาธิปไตย ครอบครัว ประชาธิปไตย จึงใช้หลักการถือเสียงข้างมากเพื่อลงมติในประเด็นต่าง ๆ ได้อย่างสันติวิธี
6) หลักประนีประนอม หมายถึง การลดความขัดแย้งโดยการผ่อนหนักผ่อนเบาให้กัน ร่วมมือกันเพื่อเห็นแก่ประโยชน์ของส่วนรวมเป็นสำคัญ หลักการทางประชาธิปไตยจึงเป็นหลักการสำคัญที่นำมาใช้ในการดำเนินชีวิตในสังคม เพื่อก่อให้เกิดความสงบสุขในสังคมได้
