วันแม่ของประเทศไทยเดิมกำหนดเอาวันที่ 15 เมษายนของทุก ๆ ปี เป็นวันแม่แห่งชาติตามมติของคณะรัฐมนตรีประกาศรับรอง เมื่อวันที่ 23 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ.2493 ต่อมา พ.ศ.2519 ได้เปลี่ยนใหม่ให้ถือเอาวันเสด็จพระราชสมภพของสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯพระบรมราชินีนาถ คือ วันที่ 12 สิงหาคม เป็นวันแม่แห่งชาติ เริ่มครั้งแรกในปี พ.ศ.2519 เป็นต้นมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน วันแม่ถือเป็นวันสำคัญของชาวไทย โดยมี “ดอกมะลิ” ซึ่งมีสีขาวบริสุทธิ์เป็นสัญลักษณ์ของความดีงามของแม่ผู้ให้กำเนิด
