การอ่านเป็นพื้นฐานและเครื่องมือในการเรียนรู้ที่สำคัญทักษะในการอ่านและการทำความเข้าใจเรื่องที่อ่านจึงมีความสำคัญต่อการเรียนรู้เพื่อความเข้าใจในเรื่องที่อ่าน อ่านแล้วต้องสามารถสรุปและเข้าใจเรื่องที่อ่านได้ ในปัจจุบันนี้นักเรียนไทยส่วนใหญ่มองข้ามการอ่านไปอาจเริ่มจากการอ่านหนังสือเรียน หนังสือที่ชอบ อ่านป้ายโฆษณา หรือแม้กระทั้งบทความสั้นๆ และยังมีนักเรียนบางกลุ่มที่อาจจะยังไม่เข้าใจวิธีการอ่านแบบจับใจความหรืออ่านอย่างไรจึงจะเข้าใจ จึงส่งผลให้ทักษะการอ่านมีปัญหามากยิ่งขึ้น
