ประเพณีขึ้นเขาพนมรุ้ง เริ่มขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรก เมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๑ โดยความคิดริเริ่มของท่านเจ้าคุณโอภาสธรรมญาณ จากวัดท่าประสิทธิ์ จังหวัดสุรินทร์ ซึ่งเดินทางมาเพื่อปฏิบัติธรรมวิปัสสนากรรมฐานที่เขาพนมรุ้ง ซึ่งขณะนั้นยังไม่มีทางขึ้นสู่ตัวปราสาท ผู้ที่สนใจอยากขึ้นชมปราสาทต่างคนต่างขึ้นมาเองโดยไม่กำหนดเวลาประกอบกับจังหวัดสุรินทร์มีประเพณีขึ้นเขาสวายในวันแรม ๑ ค่ำ เดือน ๕ ของทุกๆ ปี ท่านเจ้าคุณโอภาสธรรมญาณเห็นว่าประเพณีขึ้นเขาเป็นสิ่งดี เพื่อให้ประชาชนได้ร่วมกันทำบุญพบปะสังสรรค์ สร้างความสามัคคีและมีโอกาสได้พักผ่อนหย่อนใจอีกด้วย จึงริเริ่มให้จัดงานประเพณีขึ้นเขาพนมรุ้งเป็นครั้งแรกในวันเพ็ญเดือน ๕ ปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๕ และประเพณีขึ้นเขาพนมรุ้งก็ได้ปฏิบัติสืบต่อกันมาจนกระทั่ง
ปัจจุบันเป็นที่น่าสังเกตว่าในช่วงงานประเพณีขึ้นเขาพนมรุ้งทุกปีจะมีปรากฏการณ์ที่สำคัญอย่างหนึ่งที่เกิดขึ้นเป็นประจำทุกปี คือในช่วงเวลานั้นเราจะมองเห็นดวงอาทิตย์ขึ้นตรงตามความยาวของปราสาทเราสามารถมองลอดประตูทางด้านทิศตะวันตกฝ่ากรอบประตูต่างๆ กว่า ๑๐ กรอบ ทะลุผ่านประตูปรางค์ประธาน และทะลุออกซุ้มประตูหน้า ความยาว ๘๘ เมตร มองเห็นดวงอาทิตย์ขึ้นตรงกรอบประตูพอดี
