เทศกาลหิมะเริ่มตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1950 โดยที่เด็กมัธยมของญี่ปุ่นช่วยกันปั่นหิมะจนกลายเป็นปติมากรรมสุดยิ่งใหญ่ที่สวนโอโดะริ ทำให้ผู้คนสนใจเป็นอย่างมากและมันกลายเป็นเทศกาลอันหน้าสนใจในเวลาต่อมา แต่ทว่าเทศกาลนี้ได้ถูกระงับไปพักหนึ่งในช่วงสงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง แต่หลังจากสงครามสิ้นสุดลงพบว่าเหล่าทหารและประชาชนได้ร่วมกันปั้นหิมะและแกะสลักออกมาเป็นรูปร่างต่างๆ และเพิ่มความอลังการมากขึ้นด้วยขนาดและรูปร่างที่สวยงาม และมันกลับมาเป็นเทศกาลสุดรื่นเริงอีกครั้งจนถึงทุกวันนี
