เขาใหญ่ มีเนื้อที่ทั้งหมดประมาณ 2,168 ตารางกิโลเมตร ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ ของ 4 จังหวัด คือ นครนายก นครราชสีมา ปราจีนบุรี และสระบุรี มีภูมิประเทศสวยงาม ประกอบด้วยป่าดิบ ป่าโปร่ง ธารน้ำ น้ำตก สัตว์ป่าและพันธุ์ไม้ป่านานาชนิด ยอดเขาที่สูงที่สุดในเทือกเขาใหญ่ คือ ยอดเขาแหลม มีความสูงจากระดับน้ำทะเล 1,292 เมตร ถูกประกาศเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ เมื่อวันที่ 18 กันยายน 2505 นับเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติแห่งแรกของประเทศไทย และถูกประกาศเป็นมรดกโลกเมื่อวันที่ 14 กรกฎาคม 2548
