อาภรณ์ ปัญญาจูล (2551) การวิจัยเรื่อง ผลกระทบทางเศรษฐกิจของการเข้าสู่วัยสูงอายุของประชากรในจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์หลักคือ (1) เพื่อศึกษาลักษณะทางเศรษฐกิจและสังคมของประชากรวัยสูงอายุในจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ (2) เพื่อศึกษาผลกระทบทางด้านเศรษฐกิจของการเข้าสู่วัยสูงอายุได้แก่ ด้านรายได้ด้านการใช้จ่ายและด้านการออม ซึ่งรวบรวมข้อมูลจากผู้สูงอายุที่มีจานวนมากที่สุด 3 อำเภอ คือ อำเภอเมือง อำเภอสันป่าตอง และอำเภอสันทราย โดยการสุ่มตัวอย่างแบบ Stratified Sample โดยใช้แบบสอบถามจานวน 400 ชุด การวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลใช้สถิติเชิงพรรณนา ได้แก่ ค่าความถี่ ค่าเฉลี่ย และค่าร้อยละ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ผู้สูงอายุที่อาศัยอยู่ในอำเภอเมืองมีระดับการศึกษาสูงกว่าผู้สูงอายุที่อาศัยอยู่นอกเขตอำเภอเมืองที่ได้รับการศึกษาสูงสุดระดับมัธยมศึกษาตอนต้นหรือเทียบเท่าเท่านั้นผลกระทบทางด้านเศรษฐกิจ เมื่อพิจารณาจากข้อมูลด้านรายได้การใช้จ่ายและการออมพบว่ามีสภาวะทางเศรษฐกิจที่ด้อยลงเมื่อเทียบกับก่อนเข้าสู่วัยเกษียณกล่าวคือผู้สูงอายุมีรายได้เฉลี่ยต่อเดือนลดลง ส่วนใหญ่มีรายได้หลักจากบุตรมากที่สุด ด้านการใช้จ่ายพบว่าผู้สูงอายุมีรายการใช้จ่ายที่ลดลงเนื่องจากผู้สูงอายุบางส่วนได้ย้ายเข้ามาอาศัยอยู่กับบุตรและบุตรได้เข้ามาช่วยรับภาระค่าใช้จ่ายในชีวิตประจาวันมีค่าใช้จ่ายเพื่อเป็นค่ารักษาพยาบาลเพิ่มขึ้น ผู้สูงอายุในทุกอำเภอมีลักษณะการใช้จ่ายคล้ายคลึงกัน ด้านการออมพบว่าผู้สูงอายุมีเงินออมเฉลี่ยต่อเดือนลดลงเพราะประชากรวัยสูงอายุส่วนใหญ่มีรายได้ลดลงจึงทำให้ไม่มีเงินเหลือเก็บออม ผู้สูงอายุที่อาศัยอยู่ในอำเภอเมืองมีสัดส่วนที่เห็นว่าตนเองประสบปัญหาด้านการเงินสูงกว่าผู้สูงอายุในอำเภออื่นๆ ในขณะที่ผู้สูงอายุในอำเภออื่นๆ จะมีสัดส่วนที่ประสบปัญหาด้านสุขภาพมากกว่าผู้สูงอายุในอำเภอเมือง
