การศึกษาครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการเปลี่ยนแปลงการใช้ประโยชน์ที่ดิน อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดบุรีรัมย์ ระหว่าง ปี พ.ศ. 2547 และ ปี พ.ศ. 2557 รวมทั้งสิ้น 28 ตำบล โดยใช้ภาพถ่ายดาวเทียม LANDSAT5 และ LANDSAT 8 มาวิเคราะห์การเปลี่ยนแปลงด้วยวิธี Supervised Classification เพื่อจำแนกประเภทของการใช้ประโยชน์ที่ดิน
ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ในช่วงระยะเวลา 10 ปี พื้นที่ป่ามีการเปลี่ยนแปลงพื้นที่ลดลงร้อยละ 23.61 พื้นที่เกษตรกรรมมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงพื้นที่เพิ่มขึ้นร้อยละ 15.93 พื้นที่ชุมชนและสิ่งปลูกสร้างมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงพื้นที่เพิ่มขึ้นร้อยละ 9.82 พื้นที่แหล่งน้ำมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงพื้นที่ลดลงร้อยละ 0.69 และพื้นที่เบ็ดเตล็ดมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงพื้นที่ลดลงร้อยละ 0.92 ปัจจัยที่ส่งผลให้เกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงที่เห็นได้ชัดคือ มีการขยายตัวของชุมชนและสิ่งปลูกสร้างเพิ่มขึ้น ทำให้เกิดการปลูกสร้างอาคาร ที่อยู่อาศัยให้รองรับกับจำนวนประชากรที่เพิ่มขึ้นได้ บ้านเรือนของประชากรขยายสู่ชนบทมากขึ้น แต่ประชากรอำเภอเมือง ยังคงยึดถืออาชีพเกษตรกรรมเป็นอันดับแรก รวมไปถึงมีการตัดไม้ของบุคคลบางส่วน เพื่อนำไม้ไปแปรรูปเป็นผลิตภัณฑ์ และจำหน่ายเป็นรายได้หลักหรือรายได้เสริม ทำให้พื้นที่ดังกล่าวมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงพื้นที่ลดลง
