ชาวพม่ารู้จักเรื่องราวของรามเกียรติ์ในนามว่า “ยามะซัตด่อ” ซึ่งแปลว่า "ชาติ คือกำเนิดเรื่องราวอันยิ่งใหญ่ของพระราม" วรรณกรรมดังกล่าวในพม่าได้ปรากฏหลักฐานมาตั้งแต่สมัยพุกาม และยังมีพัฒนาการอย่างต่อเนื่องมาจนปัจจุบัน ละตะเมง ผู้ศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์รามเกียรติพม่าได้กล่าวว่าในวัฒนธรรมพม่านั้นได้จัดแบ่งเรื่องราวของรามเกียรติ์ออกไว้เป็น ๓ ชนิด จากกำเนิดที่มาของเรื่อง ได้แก่

๑.ต้นเรื่องกำเนิดรามชาติจากชาดกในพุทธศาสนา ซึ่งพม่าเรียกว่า “อลองด่อยามะ”
๒. ต้นเรื่องกำเนิดรามชาติที่ได้รับการดัดแปลงเรื่องราวมาจากไทย พม่าเรียกรามเกียรติ์ชนิดนี้ว่า “ปงด่อยามะ”
๓. ต้นเรื่องรามชาติที่มาจากตำนานการนับถือเทพเจ้าในฝ่ายศาสนาพราหมณ์ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับเทพเจ้าต่างๆ พม่าเรียกรามเกียรติ์ชนิดนี้ว่า “ปชูยามะ”
