ความหมายสิ่งแวดล้อม ตามพระราชบัญญัติส่งเสริมและรักษาคุณภาพสิ่งแวดล้อมแห่งชาติ พ.ศ. 2535 หมายถึง สิ่งต่าง ๆ ที่มีลักษณะทางกายภาพและชีวภาพที่อยู่รอบตัวมนุษย์ ซึ่งเกิดขึ้นโดยธรรมชาติและสิ่งที่มนุษย์ได้ทำขึ้น

จากสิ่งแวดล้อมเทคโนโลยีและชีวิตให้ความหมายของสิ่งแวดล้อมไว้ดังนี้

สิ่งแวดล้อมหมายถึงสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นตามธรรมชาติและที่มนุษย์สร้างขึ้นที่เป็นรูปธรรมและนามธรรมสิ่งที่เห็นได้ด้วยตาและไม่สามารถเห็นได้ด้วยตาสิ่งที่มีชีวิตและไม่มีชีวิตตลอดจนสิ่งที่เป็นทั้งที่ให้คุณและให้โทษ

กลุ่มนักสิ่งแวดล้อมให้นิยามว่า “สิ่งแวดล้อม” หมายถึงสิ่งต่าง ๆ ที่อยู่รอบตัวเรา

ประเภทของสิ่งแวดล้อม แบ่งออกเป็น 2 ประเภท
1. สิ่งแวดล้อมทางธรรมชาติ (Natural environment) สิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นเองตามธรรมชาติ เช่น ป่าไม้ สัตว์ป่า อากาศ ดิน น้ำ มนุษย์ สิ่งเหล่านี้ต้องอาศัยสิ่งแวดล้อมอื่นประกอบ แบ่งออกเป็น 2 ประเภทย่อย
- สิ่งที่มีชีวิต (Biotic Environment) หรือเรียกว่าสิ่งแวดล้อมทางชีวภาพ (Biological Environment) เกิดขึ้นเองตามธรรมชาติมีคุณสมบัติเฉพาะตัวของสิ่งที่มีชีวิต เช่น พืช สัตว์ มนุษย์
- สิ่งที่ไม่มีชีวิต (Abiotic Environment) หรือ สิ่งแวดล้อมทางกายภาพ อาจจะมองเห็นหรือมอง ไม่เห็น เช่น แร่ธาตุ อากาศ เสียง

2. สิ่งแวดล้อมที่มนุษย์สร้างขึ้น (Man-Made Environment) ได้จากทรัพยากรดั้งเดิม แล้วมนุษย์เป็นผู้ดัดแปลงเช่น ถนน บ้านเมือง ซึ่งเป็นสิ่งแวดล้อมเป็นนามธรรม (Abstract หรือ Social Environment) เช่น วัฒนธรรม ประเพณี การเมือง ศาสนา กฎหมาย

สิ่งแวดล้อม มีคุณสมบัติเฉพาะตัวในแต่ละประเภท สิ่งแวดล้อมนั้น ๆ อยู่ร่วมกับสิ่งแวดล้อมอื่น ๆมีความเกี่ยวเนื่องและสัมพันธ์ต่อกันเป็นลูกโซ่ เมื่อทำลายสิ่งแวดล้อมหนึ่งย่อมส่งผลกระทบต่อสิ่งแวดล้อมอื่นๆ เนื่องจากสิ่งแวดล้อมจะมีลักษณะที่ทนทานต่อการถูกกระทบแตกต่างกัน

คุณสมบัติเฉพาะตัวของสิ่งแวดล้อม

สิ่งแวดล้อมแต่ละประเภทมักมีลักษณะทนทาน และเปราะบางต่อการถูกกระทบต่างกัน
สิ่งแวดล้อมมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงตามกาลเวลาที่เปลี่ยนไป ซึ่งอาจเป็นการเปลี่ยนแปลงช่วยคราวหรือถาวรก็ได้

(3.) คุณค่าการใช้ประโยชน์ของมนุษย์สิ่งแวดล้อมที่มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงเป็นการที่มนุษย์ใช้เทคโนโลยีที่เหมาะสมมาสร้างคุณค่าการใช้ประโยชน์ของมนุษย์ เช่น เกษตรกรรม พลังงงาน
(4.) คุณค่าคุณภาพชีวิต เป็นกลุ่มทรัพยากรที่เกี่ยวข้องทางเศรษฐสังคม ผลที่เกิดจากการใช้ทรัพยากรจะเป็นตัวชี้ประเด็นว่าสภาพของสิ่งแวดล้อมจะเป็นอย่างไร

4. มิติเศรษฐสังคม/มิติมนุษย์ หมายถึงสิ่งแวดล้อมทางเศรษฐกิจและสังคมที่เป็นองค์ประกอบภาคในสิ่งแวดล้อมที่ถูกสร้างขึ้นโดยมนุษย์เช่น ประชากร กฎระเบียบ วัฒนธรรมและสิ่งแวดล้อมที่เกี่ยวกับมนุษย์
