วัดอโศการามตั้งอยู่บนพื้นที่ "นาแม่ขาว" เจ้าของที่ดิน ชื่อ นางกิงหงษ์ และนายสุเมธ ไกรกาญจน์ ได้ถวายที่ดินสร้างวัดประมาณ 53 ไร่ เมื่อปี พ.ศ.2497 จนกระทั่งปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๙๘ จึงได้เริ่มตั้งสำนักขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรก โดยให้พระลูกศิษย์ คือพระครูใบฎีกาทัศน์ มาเฝ้าสำนักแทน พร้อมกับลูกศิษย์อีก ๕ รูป รวมมีพระที่สำนักนี้ในครั้งเริ่มตั้ง จำนวน ๖ รูป"
ท่านพ่อลีได้เริ่มก่อตั้งสำนักสงฆ์เน้นวัตรปฏิบัติใน ทางธุดงควัตรอันสืบเนื่องจากท่านได้มีนิมิตว่าเป็นบริเวณ ที่บรรจุพระบรมธาตุ การที่วัดนี้ได้ชื่อว่าวัดอโศการาม เพราะท่านพ่อลีประสงค์จะให้เป็นอนุสรณ์ระลึกถึงคุณพระเจ้าอโศกมหาราช กษัตริย์ของอินเดียที่ได้เผยแผ่พระพุทธศาสนามายังแถบเอเชียโดยเฉพาะประเทศไทยท่านพ่อลีได้คิดตั้งชื่อวัดนี้ไว้ตั้งแต่ครั้งที่ท่านจำพรรษาอยู่ในตำบลสารนาถ เมืองพาราณสี เมื่อออกพรรษาและได้จัดงานพระราชทานเพลิงศพสมเด็จฯ เรียบร้อยแล้ว เป็นปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๙๘ ท่านพ่อลี จึงได้ออกไปจำพรรษาที่วัดอโศการาม ในระหว่างนี้ได้เริ่มคิดดำริจัดงานฉลองสมโภช ๒๕ พุทธศตวรรษ ในปีพ.ศ.๒๕๐๐ การดำริในเรื่องนี้ ท่านได้ดำริมานานปีแล้ว คือเริ่มดำริตั้งแต่ปีที่ได้เดินทาง ออกมาจากดงบ้านผาแด่นแสนกันดาร( เชียงใหม่) วัดอโศการาม ได้รับการพัฒนาสืบเนืองมาโดยลำดับ แม้หลังท่านพ่อลีได้มรณะภาพไปแล้ว ( ปี พ.ศ.๒๕๐๔)ได้มีการขยายพื้นที่ออกไป ทางด้านทิศตะวันออก ซึ่งเป็นสถานที่ตั้งของวิหารสุทธิธรรมรังสีในปัจจุบัน พร้อมกันนั้นก็ได้ทำการสร้างพระธุตังคเจดีย์ ที่ท่านพ่อได้วางแบบเอาไว้ให้สำเร็จลุล่วงไปด้วยดี เป็นปูชนียสถานประดิษฐานพระบรมสารีริธาตุ ไว้เป็นที่สักการะของเหล่าเทวดา และมนุษย์ทั้งหลายชือว่า " ธุตังคเจดีย์" เป็นเจดีย์หมู่ ๑๓ องค์วัดอโศการาม เป็นสถานที่ปฏิบ้ติธรรมกัมมัฏฐานภาวนา ที่ท่านพ่อลี ได้วางรากฐานไว้ เหล่าศิษยานุศิษย์ได้ปฏิบัติสืบ ๆ กันมาตราบเท่าทุกวันนี้ โดยเฉพาะหล้กอานาปานสติกัมมัฏฐานะ เป็นหลักฐาน ให้แก่ผู้สนใจได้ศึกษาทดลองปฏิบัติ จนเป็นที่น่าพอใจสมควรแก่การปฏิบัติของแต่ท่าน จวบจนปัจจุบัน

จากหมายเหตุที่ท่านพ่อได้ปรารภไว้ใน หนังสือชีวประวัติของท่าน ความว่า การตั้งชื่อวัดอโศการามนี้ มิใช่ได้คิดขึ้น ในคราวที่ตั้งได้คิดชื่อนี้ขึ้น ตั้งแต่ปีจำพรรษาอยู่ที่ตำบลสารนารถ เมืองพาราณสี ได้เอานามของท่านผู้มีคุณวุฒิ เป็นฉายาลักษณ์ของผู้ทรงคุณ ฉะนั้นจึงได้สร้างพระรูปนี้ขึ้นประกอบในนามของวัด เพื่อเป็นสวัสดิมงคลสืบต่อไป แต่ที่จริงชื่อวัดอันนี้ สมเด็จพระมหาวีรวงศ์เคยรับสั่งเล่าให้ฟัง อันเป็นสิ่งที่น่ากลัวจะไม่สำเร็จในงานอันนั้น แต่ถึงอย่างนั้นก็ได้ทำรายงานยืน ไปตามระเบียบการคณะสงฆ์ ก็ไม่มีท่านสังฆมนตรีองค์ใดองค์หนึ่งคัดค้าน ว่าไม่เหมาะสม เมื่อเป็นเช่นนี้ ก็พอใจ
