ข้อตกลงการค้าเสรีอเมริกาเหนือ เป็นข้อตกลงเพื่อเปิดการค้าเสรีระหว่างสหรัฐอเมริกา แคนาดา และเม็กซิโก โดยมีพื้นฐานมาจากเขตการค้าเสรีสหรัฐฯ-แคนาดา (U.S.-Canada Free Trade Area : FTA) ที่มีผลใช้บังคับตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 มกราคม 2532 และความร่วมมือทางการค้าและการลงทุนระหว่างสหรัฐฯ และเม็กซิโก ซึ่งได้เริ่มตั้งแต่ปี 2530
ต่อมาได้มีการเจรจาเขตการค้าเสรีอเมริกาเหนือ โดยเริ่มเจรจาสาระของเขตการค้าเสรีฯ ในเดือนมิถุนายน 2534 และผู้นำทั้งสามชาติได้ร่วมลงนามรับรองเขตการค้าเสรี เมื่อวันที่ 17 ธันวาคม 2535 ซึ่ง NAFTA เริ่มมีผลบังคับใช้ตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 มกราคม 2537
