มีระบบการปกครองแบบสังคมนิยมคอมมิวนิสต์ หรือทางการลาวใช้คำว่า ระบอบประชาธิปไตยประชาชน โดยพรรคการเมืองเดียว คือ พรรคประชาชนปฏิวัติลาว มีนายกรัฐมนตรีเป็นหัวหน้ารัฐบาล และมี “ประธานประเทศ” (ประธานาธิบดี) เป็นประมุข



เศรษฐกิจและทรัพยากรที่สำคัญ

ภาวะเศรษฐกิจของลาวมีพัฒนาการที่ดีขึ้นตามลำดับนับตั้งแต่เปลี่ยนเป็นระบบเศรษฐกิจเสรีการตลาดเมื่อ พ.ศ.2529 ลาวมีทรัพยากรธรรมชาติที่สมบูรณ์ โดยมีผืนป่าและพื้นที่ทำการเกษตรขนาดใหญ่รวมทั้งมีแร่ธาตุต่างๆ เช่น ดีบุก ยิปซัม ตะกั่ว เหล็ก ถ่านหิน อัญมณี และน้ำมัน ไปจนถึงมีเหมืองแร่ทองคำ และยังมีแหล่งน้ำสำหรับผลิตไฟฟ้าส่งออกที่สร้างรายได้ให้ประเทศอย่างมาก



ประวัติ

*แต่เดิมลาวอยู่ใต้การปกครองอาณาจักรน่าน ต่อมาก็ตกอยู่ในการปกครองของสยามนานถึง 114 ปี จนเกิดวิกฤติการณ์ ร.ศ.112 สยามต้องยกดินแดนลาวทั้งหมดให้เป็นของฝรั่งเศส

*ในช่วงสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 กองทัพญี่ปุ่นรุกเข้ามาในลาว ขบวนการลาวอิสระจึงได้ประกาศเอกราช

*เมื่อญี่ปุ่นแพ้สงคราม ลาวจึงตกอยู่ในอำนาจฝรั่งเศสอีกครั้ง

*ฝรั่งเศสแพ้เวียดนามที่เดียนเบียนฟู ลาวจึงได้รับเอกราชอย่างสมบูรณ์ใน พ.ศ.2496 โดยมีเจ้ามหาชีวิตศรีสว่างวงศ์ เป็นพระมหากษัตริย์

*ต่อมาเมื่อเจ้าสว่างวัฒนาขึ้นครองราชย์ต่อ เจ้าสุภานุวงศ์ หนึ่งในขบวนการลาวอิสระประกาศตนเป็นพวกนิยมคอมมิวนิสต์ และเป็นหัวหน้าขบวนการประเทศลาวออกเคลื่อนไหวทางการเมือง

*พ.ศ.2518 พรรคปฏิวัติประชาชนลาว ที่นำโดยเจ้าสุภานุวงศ์ ยึดอำนาจรัฐบาลของเจ้าสว่างวัฒนาได้สำเร็จ และประกาศสถาปนา “สาธารณรัฐประชาธิปไตยประชาชนลาว” ขึ้นอย่างเป็นทางการในวันที่ 2 ธันวาคม พ.ศ.2518
