วันเด็กแห่งชาติ ตรงกับวันเสาร์ที่ 2

วันเด็กแห่งชาติ ตรงกับวันเสาร์ที่ 2 ของเดือนมกราคมของทุกปี เป็น วันหยุดราชการที่มิได้ชดเชยในวันทำงานถัดไป (วันจันทร์) มีการให้คำขวัญวันเด็กทุกปีโดยนายกรัฐมนตรีที่ดำรงตำแหน่งในขณะนั้น
งานวันเด็กแห่งชาติจัดขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรก เมื่อวันจันทร์แรกของเดือนตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2498 ตามคำเชิญชวนของ นายวี.เอ็ม. กุลกานี ผู้แทนองค์การสหพันธ์เพื่อสวัสดิภาพเด็กระหว่างประเทศแห่งสหประชาชาติ เพื่อให้ประชาชนเห็นความสำคัญและความต้องการของเด็ก และเพื่อกระตุ้นให้เด็กตระหนักถึงบทบาทอันสำคัญของตนในประเทศ โดยปลูกฝังให้เด็กมีส่วนร่วมในสังคม เตรียมพร้อมให้ตนเองเป็นกำลังของชาติ
รัฐบาลได้จัดให้มีคณะกรรมการจัดงานวันเด็กแห่งชาติขึ้นมาคณะหนึ่ง ทำหน้าที่ประสานงานกับหน่วยงานต่างๆ ทั้งภาครัฐบาลรัฐวิสาหกิจ และเอกชน กำหนดให้มีการฉลองวันเด็กแห่งชาติทั้งในส่วนกลางและส่วนภูมิภาค จุดประสงค์เพื่อให้เด็กทั่วประเทศทั้งในระบบโรงเรียนและนอกระบบโรงเรียน ได้รู้ถึงความสำคัญของตน เกี่ยวกับสิทธิ หน้าที่ ความรับผิดชอบ ระเบียบวินัย ที่มีต่อตนเองและสังคม มีความยึดมั่นในสถาบันชาติ ศาสนา พระมหากษัตริย์ และการปกครองในระบอบประชาธิปไตย อันมีพระมหากษัตริย์เป็นประมุข
งานวันเด็กแห่งชาติจัดขึ้นทุกปีในวันจันทร์แรกของเดือนตุลาคมจนถึง พ.ศ. 2506 และใน พ.ศ. 2507 ไม่สามารถจัดงานวันเด็กได้ทัน จึงได้เริ่มจัดอีกครั้งในปี พ.ศ. 2508 โดยเปลี่ยนเป็นวันเสาร์ที่ 2 ของเดือนมกราคม เนื่องจากเห็นว่าเป็นช่วงหมดฤดูฝนและเป็นวันหยุดราชการ จนถึงทุกวันนี้

กิจกรรมต่าง ๆ ที่ควรปฏิบัติในวันเด็กแห่งชาติ
- ให้เด็กได้ตระหนักถึงคุณค่าบทบาท และความสำคัญของตนเอง
