วัดสุวรรณดารารามราชวรวิหาร อยู่ในเขตพระนครด้านทิศตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ของเกาะเมือง
เป็นวัดที่เหมาะสำหรับผู้ที่สนใจมาดูภาพจิตรกรรมที่ฝาผนังในวิหาร ซึ่งเป็นภาพเขียนสีน้ำมัน
ฝีมือของ มหาเสวกตรี พระยาอนุศาสน์จิตร เป็นภาพ เรื่องพระราชพงศาวดาร
สมเด็จพระนเรศวรมหาราช เป็นภาพเขียนที่มีความเหมือนจริงมีใบหน้า ร่างกายกล้ามเนื้อ

ประวัติ
วัดสุวรรณดาราราม ตั้งอยู่ภายในกำแพงกรุงศรีอยุธยาทางทิศใต้ ริมป้อม เพชรตำบลหอรัตไชย
อำเภอพระนครศรีอยุธยา บิดาของสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราชได้สร้าง “วัดทอง”
ขึ้นใกล้กับบริเวณนิวาสถานเดิม

ต่อมาเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2310 พม่าได้ยกกองทัพมาตีกรุงศรีอยุธยาแตก วัดทองก็ถูกพม่าทำลาย
กลายเป็นวัดร้างมานานถึง 18 ปี

ครั้นใน พ.ศ.2325 เมื่อพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช ทรงปราบดาภิเษก
และสร้างกรุงเทพมหานครเป็นราชธานีแล้ว ต่อมาใน พ.ศ.2328 ได้ทรงโปรดเกล้าฯ
ให้ปฏิสังขรณ์วัดทองที่ถูกทิ้งร้างมาตั้งแต่กรุงแตกใหม่ทั้งอาราม ในการปฏิสังขรณ์
และการก่อสร้างครั้งนี้ กรมพระราชวังบวรมหาสุร สิงหนาท พระอนุชาได้ทรงร่วมปฏิสังขรณ์
และก่อสร้างพระอุโบสถ พระเจดีย์ และหมู่กุฏิทั้งหมดด้วย เมื่อการบูรณะปฏิสังขรณ์แล้วเสร็จ
พระองค์ได้พระราชทานนามใหม่ตามชื่อของพระราชบิดา(ทองดี)และพระราชมารดา(ดาวเรือง)
ว่า “วัดสุวรรณดาราราม”

เมื่อพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราชเสด็จสวรรคต พระมหากษัตริย์
รัชกาลต่อมาแห่งราชวงค์จักรี ได้บูรณะปฏิสังขรณ์วัดนี้ต่อมาเป็นลำดับ มีการก่อสร้างพระวิหาร
เจดีย์ กำแพงแก้ว และปูชนียสถานอื่นๆภายในพระอารามแห่งนี้ นับได้ว่าวัดสุวรรณดารา
เป็นพระอารามแห่งราชวงศ์จักรีโดยแท้ และเป็นวัดที่สวยงามมีสง่าน่าชมยิ่งนัก

ภายในพระอุโบสถ ประดิษฐานพระประธานซึ่งจะลองขยายส่วนจาก
พระพุทธมหามณีรัตนปฏิมากรพระแก้วมรกต (พระแก้วมรกต) วัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดาราม
รูปทรงงดงาม ซึ่งเป็นพระพุทธรูปปูนปั้นปิดทอง ปางมารวิชัย ขัดสมาธิราบเหนือพระรัตน

แต่ไม่มีคันทวย และหน้าบันเป็นรูปช้างเอราวัณยืนแท่น ทูนแว่นฟ้า บนพานมีฉัตร 5 ชั้น
ภายในพระวิหารประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปโลหะลงรักปิดทอง มีเรือนแก้วแบบเรือนแก้ว
พระพุทธชินราช แต่เป็นจำหลักเขียนสีปิดทอง

สิ่งสำคัญภายในวัดซึ่งถือว่ามีคุณค่าควรแก่การดูแลรักษาไว้เป็นอย่างดี นั้นก็คือ
ภาพจิตรกรรมฝาฝนังในพระอุโบสถ และพระวิหาร โดยเฉพาะภาพจิตรกรรมในพระอุโบสถ
ซึ่งมีอายุกว่า 200 ปี โดยได้รับความอุปถัมภ์จากพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวตอนต้น
