พิพิธภัณฑ์สถานแห่งชาติ ร้อยเอ็ด ถือ

พิพิธภัณฑ์สถานแห่งชาติ ร้อยเอ็ด ถือกำเนิดขึ้นครั้งแรกตามดำริของ

ศาสตราจารย์ ดร. ก่อ สวัสดิ์พาณิชย์ (อดีตรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงศึกษาธิการ) ซึ่งต้องการ

ที่จะจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์สถานเพื่อเก็บรักษาและจัดแสดงเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับศิลปหัตถกรรมอีสาน

โดยเฉพาะเรื่องราวของผ้าไหมและผ้าพื้นเมือง ซึ่งในช่วงเวลานั้นกรมศิลปากรมีนโยบายการ

จัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์สถานแห่งชาติประจำเมืองดยเฉพาะการจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์สถานแห่งใหม่

ในจังหวัดที่ยังไม่มีพิพิธภัณฑ์สถาน จึงได้มีการนำเอาแนวความคิดทั้งสองส่วนมาผสมผสานกัน

และจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์สถานแห่งชาติ ร้อยเอ็ด

พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ ร้อยเอ็ด เริ่มดำเนินการจัดตั้งมาตั้งแต่ปีงบประมาณ

พ.ศ. 2536 ต่อเนื่องจนกระทั่งปี พ.ศ. 2540 จึงแล้วเสร็จสมบูรณ์โดยใช้งบประมาณทั้งสิ้นกว่า

41 ล้านบาท เป็นพิพิธภัณฑ์สถานแห่งชาติที่จัดแสดงและรวบรวมเรื่่องราวที่น่ารู้ของจังหวัด

ร้อยเอ็ด ทั้งด้านภูมิศาสตร์ ทรัพยากรธรณี ใบราณคดี ประวัติศาสตร์ บุคคลสำคัญ วิถีชีวิต

ประเพณี และศิลปวัฒนธรรม

พิพิธภัณฑ์สถานแห่งชาติ ร้อยเอ็ด ได้รับการประกาศเป็นพิพิธภัณฑ์สถานแห่งชาติ

ตามประกาศกระทรวงศึกษาธิการ เรื่อง การจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์สถานแห่งชาติ ร้อยเอ็ด ลงวันที่

20 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2537 ในราชกิจจานุเบกษาเล่มที่ 111 ตอนพิเศษ 43ง หน้า 11

วันที่ 5 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2537 และมีพิธีเปิดอย่างเป็นทางการเมื่อวันที่ 20 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2541
