สภาพทั่วไปของจังหวัดนนทบุรีเป็นที่ราบลุ่มมีความอุดมสมบูรณ์ จึงมีผู้คนมาตั้งถิ่นฐานเป็นชุมชนหนาแน่นตามริมแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยามาตั้งแต่อดีต เช่น บ้านวัดชลอ บ้านวัดเขมา บ้านบางม่วง บ้านตลาดขวัญ บ้านบางขนุน เป็นต้น

สมัยอยุธยา[แก้]
หลักฐานการตั้งถิ่นฐานที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดในจังหวัดนนทบุรีปรากฏที่วัดปรางค์หลวง[4] ตั้งอยู่ในตำบลบางม่วง อำเภอบางใหญ่ เป็นวัดที่มีพระปรางค์ลักษณะย่อมุมไม้ยี่สิบขนาดใหญ่ สันนิษฐานว่าสมเด็จพระรามาธิบดีที่ 1 (พระเจ้าอู่ทอง) โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างขึ้นเพื่อเป็นหลักแก่ชุมชนชาวเมืองอู่ทองที่อพยพหนีโรคระบาดมาตั้งบ้านเรือนอยู่บริเวณนี้ก่อนจะมีการสถาปนากรุงศรีอยุธยาเป็นราชธานี[5] ชุมชนแห่งนี้ได้ขยายตัวและกระจัดกระจายออกไปตามพื้นที่ต่าง ๆ ในบริเวณนี้ โดยมีชุมชนสำคัญอีกแห่งหนึ่งคือ บ้านตลาดขวัญ ตั้งอยู่ริมแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา แต่ท้องที่จังหวัดนนทบุรีทั้งหมดในสมัยนี้ยังคงเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของกรุงศรีอยุธยา[6]

จนกระทั่งปี พ.ศ. 2091 สมเด็จพระมหาจักรพรรดิโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ขุดคลองลัดแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา จากเหนือวัดชลอไปทะลุใกล้วัดมูลเหล็ก (ปัจจุบันคือวัดสุวรรณคีรี เขตบางกอกน้อย) เพื่อใช้เป็นเส้นทางลัดในการเดินทางและเพื่อเพิ่มปริมาณแหล่งน้ำสำหรับการเกษตรในพื้นที่[7]

ในปีเดียวกันนั้น พระเจ้าตะเบ็งชะเวตี้ กษัตริย์พม่าได้ยกกองทัพเข้าตีกรุงศรีอยุธยา ผลจากสงครามทำให้สมเด็จพระสุริโยทัยสิ้นพระชนม์บนคอช้าง เมื่อพม่ายกทัพกลับไป และกรุงศรีอยุธยาได้จัดการพระศพสมเด็จพระสุริโยทัยเรียบร้อยแล้ว สมเด็จพระมหาจักรพรรดิจึงทรงปรับปรุงกิจการทหารให้มั่นคงกว่าเดิม พระองค์โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ตั้งเมืองใหม่ขึ้นอีกหลายเมือง รวมทั้งให้ยกฐานะหมู่บ้านตลาดขวัญขึ้นเป็น เมืองนนทบุรี ในปี พ.ศ. 2092[8] เนื่องจากมีราษฎรจำนวนมากหนีภัยสงครามครั้งนั้นไปอยู่ตามป่าเขาและไม่ยอมกลับพระนคร หากตั้งเมืองใหม่ขึ้นจะเป็นประโยชน์ต่อการเกณฑ์ไพร่พลเมื่อเกิดสงคราม นอกจากนี้ยังสามารถเป็นเมืองท่าและเมืองหน้าด่านของกรุงศรีอยุธยาได้อีกด้วย ที่ตั้งของเมืองนนทบุรีในครั้งแรกนี้ตั้งอยู่ทางฝั่งตะวันออกของแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา มีวัดหัวเมืองเป็นเขตเหนือ (ปัจจุบันคือโรงพยาบาลพระนั่งเกล้า) และมีวัดท้ายเมืองเป็นเขตใต้[9]

ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2179 รัชสมัยสมเด็จพระเจ้าปราสาททอง พระองค์โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ขุดคลองลัดตัดส่วนโค้งของแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาตั้งแต่ใต้วัดท้ายเมืองไปทะลุออกหน้าวัดเขมา[8] (เดิมแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาไหลวกเข้าไปทางบางกรวยและบางใหญ่) ซึ่งทำให้กระแสน้ำเปลี่ยนทางเดินไหลเข้าคลองที่ขุดใหม่ กลายเป็นแนวแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาหน้าศาลากลางจังหวัดหลังเก่าในปัจจุบัน ส่วนแม่น้ำเดิมก็ตื้นเขินลงเป็นคลองอ้อม คลองบางกอกน้อย และคลองบางกรวยตามที่ปรากฏในปัจจุบัน

ในปี พ.ศ. 2208 สมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราชมีพระราชดำริว่า แนวแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาที่สั้นลงจะทำให้ข้าศึกเข้าสู่กรุงศรีอยุธยาได้ง่ายขึ้น จึงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ย้ายเมืองนนทบุรีจากบ้านตลาดขวัญไปตั้งบริเวณปากคลองอ้อม บ้านบางศรีเมือง[8] (ที่ตั้งเมืองอยู่บริเวณนี้จนถึงสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 แห่งกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์) และให้สร้างกำแพงเมืองรวมทั้งป้อมปราการขึ้น 2 ป้อม คือ "ป้อมแก้ว" ตั้งอยู่ที่บ้านตลาดแก้ว (สันนิษฐานว่าอยู่ที่วัดปากน้ำในปัจจุบัน) และ "ป้อมทับทิม" ตั้งอยู่บริเวณวัดเฉลิมพระเกียรติในปัจจุบัน[10] (ปัจจุบันกำแพงและป้อมถูกรื้อไปหมดแล้ว) ในช่วงนี้สภาพเศรษฐกิจของเมืองนนทบุรีมีความมั่นคงมาก ทั้งการค้าขายและการทำสวนผลไม้[10]

ต่อมาเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2264 สมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวท้ายสระโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ขุดคลองลัดเกร็ดขึ้นตัดความโค้งของแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาช่วงที่ไหลวกอ้อมไปทางบางบัวทอง[10] ต่อมากระแสน้ำเปลี่ยนทิศทางการไหล ชายฝั่งทั้งสองข้างของคลองลัดเกร็ดถูกกัดเซาะให้ห่างออกจากกันมากขึ้น พื้นที่ตรงกลางที่มีน้ำล้อมรอบจึงกลายเป็นเกาะ เรียกว่า "เกาะเกร็ด"

เมื่อบ้านเมืองได้รับการฟื้นฟูกลับสู่สภาพปกติในสมัยกรุงธนบุรีและกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ ชาวเมืองจึงค่อย ๆ ย้ายกลับสู่ถิ่นฐานเดิม พร้อมทั้งมีผู้คนจากถิ่นอื่นเข้ามาในพื้นที่ด้วย ได้แก่ ชาวมอญที่อพยพเข้ามาในรัชสมัยสมเด็จพระเจ้าตากสินมหาราช โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ตั้งถิ่นฐานที่ปากเกร็ด[12] และอีกครั้งหนึ่งในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธเลิศหล้านภาลัย โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ตั้งถิ่นฐานอยู่ที่เมืองนนทบุรี เมืองปทุมธานี และเมืองนครเขื่อนขันธ์[13] นอกจากนี้ยังมีชาวไทยมุสลิมเมืองปัตตานีที่ถูกกวาดต้อนเข้ามาในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช[13] และชาวไทยมุสลิมเมืองไทรบุรีที่เข้ามาในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ทั้งสองพระองค์โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ชาวไทยมุสลิมเหล่านี้ตั้งถิ่นฐานที่บ้านท่าอิฐ (ปัจจุบันอยู่ในเขตอำเภอปากเกร็ด) และบ้านบางบัวทอง[13]

ต่อมาในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว พระองค์โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้เปลี่ยนสร้อยชื่อเมืองจากเดิมคือ เมืองนนทบุรีศรีมหาสมุทร เป็น เมืองนนทบุรีศรีมหาอุทยาน[14] และต่อมาเปลี่ยนเป็น เมืองนนทบุรีศรีเกษตราราม[15] ในสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ตอนต้นนี้ เมืองนนทบุรีมีฐานะเป็นหัวเมืองชายทะเล สังกัดกรมท่า[16]

ในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว พระองค์ทรงปฏิรูปการปกครองหัวเมืองต่าง ๆ เป็นการปกครองส่วนภูมิภาค เมืองนนทบุรี จึงจัดอยู่ในมณฑลกรุงเทพ แบ่งเขตการปกครองออกเป็น 4 อำเภอ ได้แก่ อำเภอ
