กระถิน หรือกระถินดอกขาว, กระถินไทย, สะตอบ้าน, สะตอเทศ (Wild Tamarind) นั้นเป็นพืชจำพวกต้นชนิดหนึ่ง อยู่ในหมู่เกาะมหาสมุทรแปซิฟิกและอเมริกาเขตร้อน ส่วนในประเทศไทยนั้นเริ่มนำสมุนไพรชนิดนี้เข้ามาปลูกตั้งแต่ช่วงสมัยสุโขทัยเลยทีเดียว และเพราะต้นกระถินนั้นปลูกง่ายขยายพันธุ์ได้ดีจึงทำให้สามารถพบเห็นได้ง่าย
ลักษณะของกระถิน
สำหรับต้นกระถินนั้นเป็นไม้พุ่มหรือไม้ต้นขนาดเล็ก ไม่ผลัดใบ สูงประมาณ 3 – 10 เมตร เปลือกลำต้นมีสีเทา ส่วนใบนั้นคล้ายขนนกสองชั้น เรียงสลับ ยาวประมาณ 12.5 – 25.0 เซนติเมตร โดยแยกแขนงออกประมาณ 3 – 19 คู่ แกนกลางใบมีขน โคนใบเบี้ยว ปลายแหลม และดอกกระถินนั้นจะมีสีขาว โดยออกดอกเป็นช่อประมาณ 1 – 3 ช่อ แบบกระจุกแน่นตามง่ามใบรวมทั้งปลายกิ่ง กลีบเลี้ยงโคนคล้ายรูประฆังติดกัน มีกลีบดอกอยู่ 5 กลีบ ปลายเป็นรูปสามเหลี่ยม 5 แฉก เมื่อดอกกระถินบานเจริญเต็มที่แล้วกว้างประมาณ 2.0 – 2.5 เซนติเมตร และเมล็ดเป็นมันมีสีน้ำตาลรูปไข่แบนกว้าง
