ทุกข์ แปลว่า สิ่งที่ดำรงคงอยู่ได้ยาก แต่มีความหมายเป็นปฏิเสธว่า ดำรงทนอยู่ไม่ได้ทีเดียว คือ ต้องเปลี่ยนแปลงไปเรื่อยๆ เพราะทุกอย่างในโลกต้องเปลี่ยนแปลงไป ไม่สามารถดำรงอยู่ได้ตลอดกาล สิ่งที่เคยมี เคยเป็น ต้องแปรเปลี่ยนไป เมื่อจิตใจรับไม่ได้กับความเปลี่ยนแปลงที่มีถึง จึงทำให้เกิดความ ไม่พอใจ ไม่สบายใจ ก็เลยกลายเป็นความทุกข์ ตามความหมายสามัญ คำว่าทุกข์ตามความหมายสามัญ หมายถึงความไม่สบายกาย ไม่สบายใจ ตรงข้ามกับความสุข ฉะนั้น เมื่อพูดถึงความทุกข์จึงมักเข้าใจกันตามหลักสามัญดังกล่าว
