แนวคิดต่อการจัดการทรัพยากรธรรมชาติในที่ประชุม World Business Council for Sustainable Development เมื่อวันที่ 10 มิถุนายน 2548 ที่เมือง Nagoya คือ ทรัพยากรธรรมชาติซึ่งเป็นปัจจัยสำคัญของการผลิตสินค้าและบริการจะมีปริมาณที่ลดลงอย่างต่อเนื่อง ธุรกิจจะมีการแข่งขันและแย่งชิงทรัพยากรธรรมชาติเพื่อให้สามารถตอบสนองต่อความต้องการของลูกค้าได้ ดังนั้น ความท้าทายของธุรกิจคือ ทำอย่างไรจึงจะมีทรัพยากรใช้ได้อย่างยั่งยืน ซึ่ง กจญ.ได้เสนอแนวคิด 3 R คือ Reduce, Reuse/Recycle, Replenish ต่อการจัดการทรัพยากรธรรมชาติไว้ สำหรับความหมายของ 3 R เป็นดังนี้
Reduce: คือลดการนำมาใช้งานซึ่งจะส่งผลให้ลดการใช้ทรัพยากรธรรมชาติ เช่น
- ลดการใช้พลังงานและวัตถุดิบ - ลด Waste, Reject, Rework
- ลด Inventory ในทุกประเภท - ลดขั้นตอนหรือกระบวนการที่ไม่มีมูลค่าเพิ่ม
- ขยายอายุการใช้งาน หรือ ซ่อมแซมเพื่อทดแทนการเปลี่ยนใหม่
- ปรับปรุงเพิ่มประสิทธิภาพของกระบวนการต่างๆ
Reuse / Recycle: คือการนำของที่ใช้แล้วหรือของเสียกลับมาใช้ใหม่ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการนำไปใช้งานในหน้าที่เดิม หรือ นำไปใช้งานในด้านอื่นๆ สำหรับของที่ใช้แล้วหรือของเสียนั้นจะมีทั้งการนำไปใช้ได้โดยตรง (Reuse) หรือ ต้องผ่านกระบวนการจัดการก่อนนำไปใช้งาน (Recycle) เช่น
- การนำวัสดุเหลือใช้หรือของเสียกลับมาใช้เป็นเชื้อเพลิงและวัตถุดิบทดแทน ทั้งภายในบริษัทและ
ระหว่างบริษัทในเครือฯ
- การหมุนเวียนน้ำใช้โดย Close circuit water system
- การใช้ภาชนะหรือบรรจุภัณฑ์ซ้ำโดยระบบการเติม (Refill) หรือ ระบบหมุนเวียน (Return)
- การคัดแยกของเสียเพื่อเพิ่มโอกาสในการนำกลับมา Reuse / Recycle
Replenish: คือการทำให้ทรัพยากรมีใช้อย่างเพียงพอ ด้วยการฟื้นฟูหรือหาทางเลือกใหม่ที่ไม่ส่งผลกระทบ หรือ มีผลกระทบต่อสิ่งแวดล้อมน้อยกว่าเดิม เช่น
- การหาแหล่งพลังงานและวัตถุดิบทดแทน โดยเน้นแหล่งทรัพยากรหมุนเวียนที่ไม่หมดไป หรือ
สามารถฟื้นฟูคืนมาได้ใหม่ในเวลาอันสั้น
- โครงการฟื้นฟูและปรับปรุงแหล่งทรัพยากรธรรมชาติที่มีการนำมาใช้งาน
- การหาแหล่งหรือทางเลือกอื่นๆ เพื่อนำมาใช้ทดแทนวัสดุหรือสิ่งของที่มีปริมาณใช้มากๆ
