ความหมายของประวัติศาสตร์
ประวัติศาสตร์เกิดจากความมีสามัญสำนึกของมนุษย์อันเป็นคุณลักษณะที่ทำให้มนุษย์แตกต่างจากสัตว์อื่น มนุษย์ผูกพันกับประวัติศาสตร์อย่างใกล้ชิด จนไม่อาจจะแยกจากกันได้นั้น คือจะพยายามเรียนรู้และเข้าใจตนเอง โดยมีประวัติศาสตร์เป็นเครื่องนำทางมุ่งศึกษาพฤติกรรมมนุษย์แล้วให้ความ สำคัญแก่ช่วงเวลาที่เกิดเหตุการณ์หรือพฤติกรรมนั้นๆ มาก
คนทั่วไปมักจะมีความเข้าใจว่าประวัติศาสตร์คือ “อดีต” หรือ “ส่วนหนึ่งของอดีต” แต่ในความเป็นจริงนั้น “อดีต” ก็คือ “เรื่องราวต่างๆ ที่ผ่าน” และ “ส่วนหนึ่งหรือเสี้ยวเล็กๆ เสี้ยวหนึ่งของอดีต” จะเป็นประวัติศาสตร์ได้ก็ต่อเมื่อนักประวัติศาสตร์ สนใจและเห็นความสำคัญ มีประโยชน์ ต่อมนุษย์ หรืออาจกล่าวได้ว่าประวัติศาสตร์ คือ การสืบสวนสอบสวนค้นคว้า เรื่องราวของมนุษย์ในอดีต และเรื่องราวนั้นมีผลกระทบต่อสังคมโดยส่วนรวม
เนื่องจากวิชาประวัติศาสตร์เป็นวิชาที่มีขอบข่ายเนื้อหากว้าง ดังนั้นจึงมีนักประวัติศาสตร์ได้ให้ความหมายไว้หลายๆ ทัศนะ แต่ในที่นี้จะกล่าวถึงทัศนะของนักประวัติศาสตร์บางท่านไว้ดังนี้

3. ดร. วิจิตร สินสิริ ได้แสดงทัศนะไว้ว่า “ประวัติศาสตร์คือบันทึกเหตุการณ์ต่างๆ ในอดีต เกี่ยวด้วยเรื่องเหตุการณ์ทางสังคม เศรษฐกิจ การเมือง วัฒนธรรม ปรัชญาที่มนุษย์ได้คิดได้สร้างไว้ถือเป็นความเจริญรุ่งเรือง และเป็นรากฐานของความเจริญสมัยต่อๆมา ดังนั้นเราจึงมีประวัติศาสตร์หลายแขนง เช่น ประวัติศาสตร์เศรษฐกิจ ประวัติศาสตร์อวกาศ ประวัติศาสตร์การเมืองฯลฯ
จากความหมายดังกล่าวข้างต้นของนักประวัติศาสตร์พอจะสรุปได้ว่า ประวัติศาสตร์เป็นศาสตร์ที่ศึกษา เรื่องราวเหตุการณ์ต่างๆที่เกี่ยวข้องกับมนุษย์ในอดีตซึ่งต้องอาศัยการค้นคว้าหาหลักฐาน การวิเคราะห์ การตีความ การสังเคราะห์ โดยอาศัยข้อมูล ร่องรอยหลักฐานต่างๆมาพิจารณา เพื่อให้เข้าใจสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีตให้ใกล้เคียงกับความเป็นจริงมากที่สุด
จะเห็นได้ว่าประวัติศาสตร์มีความหมายหลายนัย เช่น เกี่ยวข้องกับเรื่องราวในอดีต เกี่ยวข้องกับพฤติกรรมของมนุษย์ และมีวิธีการบันทึกอย่างเป็นระบบ รวมทั้งประวัติศาสตร์สามารถเกิดขึ้นทุกขณะ ฯลฯ
