หลังจากหน่วยงานตำรวจท่องเที่ยว ได้รับการยกฐานะขึ้นเป็น กองบังคับการตำรวจท่องเที่ยว สังกัดกองบัญชาการตำรวจสอบสวนกลาง (ผลการปฏิบัติงานของตำรวจท่องเที่ยว ,2552) ตามพระราชกฤษฎีกาแบ่งส่วนราชการกรมตำรวจ กระทรวง มหาดไทย (ฉบับที่ 17) พ.ศ. 2535 ได้แบ่งโครงสร้างออกเป็น 3 กองกำกับการ โดยกองกำกับการ 1 และ 2 มีภาระหน้าที่ปฏิบัติอยู่ในเขตพื้นที่กรุงเทพมหานคร รวมทั้งท่าอากาศยานดอนเมือง ส่วนกองกำกับการ 3 มีทั้งหมด 15 แผนก โดย แผนก 1 เป็นงานฝ่ายอำนวยการ อยู่ที่กรุงเทพมหานคร ส่วนแผนก 2-15 ตั้งอยู่ตามจังหวัดต่างๆ ตามประกาศสำนักงานตำรวจแห่งชาติ ที่ได้กำหนดที่ตั้งที่ทำการของแผนกต่างๆ ไว้ โดยเน้นจังหวัดที่มีศักยภาพด้านการท่องเที่ยว

ในปี พ.ศ. 2546 กองบังคับการตำรวจท่องเที่ยว ปรับโครงสร้างใหม่ มีผลบังคับใช้เมื่อวันที่ 18 ธันวาคม 2546 ในปี พ.ศ. 2548 กองบังคับการตำรวจท่องเที่ยว ได้มีการปรับโครงสร้างใหม่อีกครั้ง เพื่อรองรับโครง สร้างใหม่ของสำนักงานตำรวจแห่งชาติ มีผลบังคับใช้ตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 กรกฎาคม 2548
