ประเพณีการดื่มชาของอังกฤษ
ชาวอังกฤษเป็นชาติที่ดื่มชาเป็นลำดับสองของโลก โดยชาวอังกฤษแต่ละคนดื่มชาคนละประมาณ 2.1 กิโลกรัมต่อปี ซึ่งความนิยมในการดื่มชามีมาตั้งแต่คริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 19 โดยเริ่มต้นมาจากอินเดียที่เคยเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของจักรวรรดิอังกฤษ แต่ผู้ที่นำประเพณีการดื่มชาเข้ามาในอังกฤษเป็นคนแรกก็คือ แคทเธอรีนแห่งบราแกนซา สมเด็จพระราชินีในสมเด็จพระเจ้าชาร์ลส์ที่ 2 แห่งอังกฤษ ในราวระหว่างคริสต์ทศวรรษ 1660 ถึง 1670
โดยในระยะแรกนั้น การดื่มชาเป็นประเพณีสำหรับชนชั้นสูงเท่านั้น ไม่ได้แพร่หลายโดยทั่วไปเพราะยังจัดว่าเป็นสินค้าฟุ่มเฟือย แต่ต่อมาราคาชาเริ่มถูกลง จึงทำให้ประเพณีนี้เผยแพร่ทั่วไปสหราชอาณาจักร

การดื่มชาเป็นมื้ออาหาร
ชาไม่เพียงเป็นแค่เครื่องดื่มเท่านั้น แต่ยังหมายถึงอาหารว่างมื้อบ่าย (Tea meal) ไม่ว่าเครื่องดื่มจะเป็นชาหรือไม่ ประเพณีอีกอย่างหนึ่งทีเคยเป็นที่นิยมคือร้านน้ำชา (tea room) ซึ่งเป็นสถานที่ที่เสิร์ฟชาและสโคน (คล้ายมัฟฟินแต่ไม่หวาน) กับครีมข้น (Clotted cream) ซึ่งเป็นครีมที่ข้นเหมือนเนย และแยมผลไม้ การดื่มชากับสโคนกับครีมและแยม จะเรียกรวมกันว่า “Cream tea” แต่ประเพณีนี้หมดความนิยมลงตั้งแต่หลังสงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง จึงทำให้การดื่ม Cream tea จึงทำกันแต่ในบางโอกาส
วิธีดื่มชาของอังกฤษ
การดื่มชาในอังกฤษมักจะเป็นชาดำที่เสิร์ฟกับนมและบางครั้งก็น้ำตาลด้วย ส่วนชาแก่ที่เสิร์ฟกับนมและน้ำตาลจำนวนมากในถ้วยใหญ่ที่เรียกว่า “mug” นั้น มักจะเรียกกันว่า “ชาคนงาน” (Builders tea)
โดยทั่วไปแล้วการดื่มชาในอังกฤษจะไม่ใช่วัฒนธรรมชั้นสูงที่ละเอียดอ่อนอย่างที่เข้าใจกันทั่วโลก แต่เป็นเพียงกิจวัตรประจำวันเช่นเดียวกับการดื่มกาแฟของชาติอื่น ตามปกติแล้วชาวอังกฤษก็จะดื่มชากันวันละอาจจะถึงห้าหรือหกถ้วย แต่ก็มิได้หมายความว่าชาวอังกฤษจะไม่มีประเพณีการดื่มชากันอย่างเป็นทางการหรือในโอกาสพิเศษ สำหรับชนชั้นที่ทำมาหากินมีอาชีพกันทั่วไปการพักดื่มชาก็เป็นส่วนสำคัญประจำวัน โดยทั่วไปแล้วนายจ้างก็มักจะอนุญาตให้มีการพักดื่มชาสายครั้งหนึ่งและบ่ายอีกครั้งหนึ่ง
