โครงงานนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อสำรวจข้อมูลพฤติกรรมการเดินทางและปริมาณการเดินทางของนักศึกษาและบุคลากรภายในมหาวิทยาลัยสงขลานครินทร์ วิทยาเขตหาดใหญ่ สำหรับข้อมูลปริมาณการเดินทาง คณะผู้วิจัยได้ทำการสำรวจพฤติกรรมการเดินทางในแต่ละพื้นที่ศึกษาโดยออกแบบสอบถามเพื่อเก็บข้อมูลมาวิเคราะห์และได้สำรวจข้อมูลปริมาณการเดินทางเข้า-ออก ของ 3 ประตู คือ ประตูสงขลานครินทร์ ประตูศรีตรัง และประตูศรีทรัพย์ รวมไปถึงการสำรวจปริมาณการจราจรที่ผ่านวงเวียนต่างๆ ภายในมหาวิทยาลัยฯ ซึ่งได้แก่วงเวียนหน้าประตูศรีทรัพย์ วงเวียนหน้าประตูสงขลานครินทร์ วงเวียนหน้าคณะศิลปะศาสตร์ วงเวียนหน้าตึกกิจการนักศึกษา วงเวียนหน้าศูนย์กีฬา ทั้งนี้คณะผู้จัดทำได้สร้างแบบจำลองการเดินทางขึ้นมาเพื่อช่วยในการวิเคราะห์ปริมาณการเดินทาง สุดท้ายนี้คณะผู้วิจัยได้นำข้อมูลทั้งหมดมาวิเคราะห์หานโยบายและมาตรการแก้ไขและป้องกันปัญหาการจราจรติดขัดในช่วงชั่วโมงเร่งด่วน และคาดว่าหากหน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องได้แก้ไขปัญหาโดยตัดสินใจวางแผนเลี่ยงเส้นทางที่พบปัญหาหรือระบายการจราจรออกไปได้ในเส้นทางใดได้ การจัดเจ้าหน้าที่จราจรเพื่ออำนวยความสะดวกให้เหมาะสม ณ บริเวณ เวลาใด จึงเป็นประโยชน์อย่างยิ่งต่อการนำไปวางแผนการแก้ไขป้องกันปัญหาการจราจรติดขัดได้ในอนาคต ก็จะลดปริมาณการจราจรที่ติดขัดลงได้ในระดับหนึ่ง
