เป็นวัดใหญ่อยู่กลางเมือง สร้างสมัยพ่อขุนศรีอินทราทิตย์ สิ่งที่น่าสนใจมีพระเจดีย์ต่างๆ รวมถึง 200 องค์ นับเป็นวัดสำคัญประจำกรุงสุโขทัย มีพระเจดีย์มหาธาตุ และพระประธาน ล้อมรอบด้วยเจดีย์ 8 องค์ บนฐานเดียวกัน คือ ปรางค์ศิลาแลงตั้งอยู่ที่ทิศทั้ง 4 และเจดีย์แบบศรีวิชัยผสมลังกาก่อด้วยอิฐอยู่ที่มุมด้านตะวันออกบนเจดีย์ประธานมีวิหารขนาด ใหญ่ก่อด้วยศิลาแลงมีแท่นซึ่งเคยเป็นที่ประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปสำริดที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในประเทศไทย
