พระบรมรูปพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้
พระบรมรูปพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวหล่อโลหะ
พุทธศักราช ๒๕๐๘ อัฐเชิญพระบรมรูปหล่อโลหะรัชกาลที่ ๔ ขึ้นประดิษฐาน ณ ซุ้มปรางค์ บนทักษิณชั้นที่ ๒ ของพระเจดีย์ใหญ่ด้านทิศตะวันออก พระบรมรูปพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวนี้ วัดบวรนิเวศได้ดำเนินการให้กรมศิลปากรจำลองจากพระบรมรูปองค์เดิม ซึ่งประดิษฐานอยู่ ณ ตำหนักเพ็ชร ด้วยทุนบริจาคของ หม่อมเจ้า จงจิตรถนอม ดิศกุล นับเป็นพระบรมรูปจำลององค์ที่ ๒
พระบรมรูปพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้า องค์ต้นแบบซึ่งประดิษฐาน ณ ตำหนักเพ็ชรนี้ เป็นพระบรมรูปที่มีความสำคัญมากเพราะเหตุว่าเป็นพระบรมรูปของพระมหากษัตริย์ไทยรูปแรกที่สร้างขึ้นในขณะที่พระองค์ยังทรงพระชนม์ชีพอยู่ และยังเป็นต้นแบบของพระบรมรูปพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ซึ่งประดิษฐานในปราสาทพระเทพบิดร โดย พระวรวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้าประดิษฐวรการ อธิบดีกรมช่างสิบหมู่ ทรงเป็นผู้อำนวยการปั้นและหล่อ ในพุทธศักราช ๒๔๑๔
ประวัติความเป็นของพระบรมรูปซึ่งประดิษฐาน ณ ตำหนักเพ็ชร เนื่องด้วยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวมีพระราชประสงค์จะให้หล่อพระบรมรูปไปตอบถวายพระเจ้านโปเลียนที่ ๓ แห่งประเทศฝรั่งเศส เวลานั้นยังไม่มีช่างไทยที่มีฝีมือถึงขนาด จึงพระราชทานพระบรมฉายาลักษณ์ออกไปให้ช่างฝรั่งหล่อพระบรมรูปขึ้น ช่างผู้นี้คือ เอมิล ฟรังซัว ชาตรูส (Emile Francois Chatrousse) ประติมากรชาวฝรั่งเศส ลูกศิษย์ของ ฟรังซัว รูด(Francois Rude) และดาเบล เดอ ปูจอล (d’Abel de Pujol) ศิลปินได้จำลองหุ่นพระบรมรูปด้วยปูนปลาสเตอร์สูงตลอดพระองค์รวมฐานด้วย ๕๙ เซนติเมตร ทาบรอนซ์ฉลองพระองค์เปิดพระอุระ ทรงพระภูษาโจง และทรงพระมาลาสก็อต เหมือนพระบรมฉายาลักษณ์ที่ฉายด้วยกันกับสมเด็จพระเทพศิรินทรามาตย์ พระบรมราชินีในรัชกาลที่ ๔ พระบรมรูปทรงยืนในท่าตริภังค์ (Contrapposto) โดยพระเพลาข้างซ้ายรับน้ำหนักของพระสรีระ พระวรกายบิดเอี้ยวเล็กน้อย รายละเอียดของพระพักตร์ รอยยับของพระภูษาทรง ตลอดจนตราดาราและเครื่องประดับมาความเหมือนจริงมาก ปั้นเมื่อ คริสตศักราช ๑๘๖๓ ตรงกับพุทธศักราช ๒๔๐๖ ที่กรุงปารีส แล้วส่งเข้ามาถวายทอดพระเนตร แต่ไม่ทรงโปรดเพราะไม่เหมือนพระองค์เพราะประติมากรเห็นเพียงแต่พระบรมฉายาลักษณ์จึงได้ปั้นหล่อพระวรกายผิดส่วนไปจากความเป็นจริง แม้แต่เครื่องราชอิสริยาภรณ์ซึ่งควรเป็นตราดาราไอราพตซึ่งไม่มีสายสะพายนั้น ก็ทำเป็นสายสะพายห้อยดวงตราเลจอง ดอนเนอร์ (Legion d’Honneur) ของฝรั่งเศส จึงทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ช่างไทยทดลองปั้นถวาย ช่างไทยผู้นี้สมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอเจ้าฟ้ากรมพระยานริศรานุวัดติวงศ์ เข้าพระทัยว่า อาจเป็นหลวงเทพรจนา (พลับ) ซึ่งภายหลังได้เป็นพระยาจินดารังสรรค์ ถึงแม้ว่าหลวงเทพรจนายังไม่เคยปั้นรูปเหมือนบุคคลสำคัญ แต่เนื่องจากมีความสามารถในการปั้นรูปช้างและงานเบ็ดเตล็ดอื่นๆได้เหมือนจริง จึงได้รับมอบหมายให้ทดลองปั้นพระบรมรูปโดยยึดคติใหม่เป็นแบบตะวันตก การครั้งนี้พระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงเป็นแบบ โดยทรงแต่งพระองค์ตามรูปแบบที่ซาตรูสปั้นขึ้นมา จึงถือได้ว่าเป็นการปั้นพระบรมรูปมหากษัตริย์ไทยที่ยังดำรงพระชนม์อยู่เป็นครั้งแรกของไทย
พระบรมรูปองค์นี้อยู่ในพระราชอิริยาบถยืนตรง ทรงฉลองพระองค์เสื้อเยียรบับ ทรงพระภูษาโจงขอบเชิง ทรงพระมาลาทรงหม้อตาล ทรงสายสะพายเลจองดอนเนอร์ของฝรั่งเศส ทรงฉลองพระบาท พระหัตถ์ขวาทรงจับพระแสงดาบหัตถ์นารายณ์ ทอดปลายพระแสงดาบลงพื้น พระหัตถ์ซ้ายทรงถือหนังสือ ลักษณะพระบรมรูปมีความเหมือนที่พระพักตร์และพระวรกายซึ่งไม่อ้วนท้วนจนมีกล้ามเนื้อเป็นฝรั่งเหมือนอย่างผลงานของซาตรูส
ครั้นพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวได้ทอดพระเนตรแล้วก็ทรงโปรด เพราะหลวงเทพรจนาได้แสดงถึงฝีมือในการปั้นพระบรมรูปพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว โดยการผสมผสานลักษณะรูปเหมือนบุคคลตามคติตะวันตกกับการยึดถือความเกลี้ยงเกลาและความสวยงามเรียบง่ายตามคติอุดมคติไทยโบราณเข้าด้วยกันได้เป็นอย่างดี ทั้งนี้ยังได้ลบล้างความเชื่อเดิมที่ห้ามจำลองรูปเหมือนบุคคลขณะมีชีวิตอยู่ เพราะเกรงว่าจะเป็นการบั่นทอนชีวิตให้สั้นลง อย่างไรก็ตามมิได้มีการหล่อพระบรมรูปองค์นี้ เพราะมีผู้แย้งว่าเป็นเรื่องอัปมงคลที่จะนำพระบรมรูปหุ่นขี้ผึ้งสุมไฟหลอมให้ละลายจึงได้แต่เพียงหล่อด้วยปูนปลาสเตอร์และทาสีแทน แล้วอัญเชิญไปเก็บไว้ในหอเสถียรธรรมปริตร ต่อมาเมื่อหอเสถียรธรรมปริตรรื้อลง จึงย้ายไปเก็บไว้ที่หอราชพงษานุสรณ์ในรัชกาลที่ ๕ ถึงรัชกาลที่ ๗ สมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ เจ้าฟ้ากรมหลวงลพบุรีราเมศวร์ ซึ่งดำรงตำแหน่งเสนาบดีรกระทรวงมหาดไทย ขอพระราชทานไปประดิษฐานไว้ ณ พระที่นั่งเวชยันตวิเชียรปราสาท ในพระนครคีรี จังหวัดเพชรบุรี ตามพระราชดำรัสแนะนำของสมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ กรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพ เมื่อ พุทธศักราช ๒๔๗๐
ต่อมาเมื่อพุทธศักราช ๒๕๐๓ อสุนิบาตต้องพระที่นั่งองค์นี้ แม้มิได้ต้องตรงถึงกับทำลายพระที่นั่งก็ดี แต่ความสะเทือนทำให้พระกรของพระบรมรูปชำรุด พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลปัจจุบันได้พระราชทานพระราชทรัพย์ส่วนพระองค์ให้ซ่อมแซมพระที่นั่งและพระบรมรูปให้คืนดีดังเดิม
ถึง พุทธศักราช ๒๕๐๕ บรรดาพระราชนัดดาในพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงเห็นว่าน่าจะคิดหล่อพระบรมรูปด้วยโลหะให้เป็นการถาวรเสียทีเดียว จึงได้นำความกราบบังคมทูลเจ้านายชั้นพระบรมวงศ์ ก็ทรงดำริเห็นชอบ ต่างก็ทรงประทานทุนทรัพย์ช่วยเหลือ รวบรวมเงินได้ ๕๖,๗๓๓.๖๓ จึงได้ดำเนินการให้กรมศิลปากรหล่อพระบรมรูปดังกล่าวด้วยโลหะ เสร็จแล้วจึงอัญเชิญพระบรมรูปหล่อโลหะนั้นไปประดิษฐานไว้ ณ พระที่นั่งเวชยันตวิเชียรปราสาท เมื่อวันที่ ๑๒ พฤษภาคม ๒๕๐๕
ต่อมาสมเด็จพระญาณสังวร สมเด็จพระสังฆราช (ขณะดำรงสมณศักดิ์ที่พระสาสนโสภณ) ทรงทราบเรื่อง พระบรมรูปองค์เดิมยังคงอยู่ที่กรมศิลปากร ทรงพระดำริว่าพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ก็เสด็จประทับ ณ วัดบวรนิเวศวิหาร เป็นเวลานาน ควรที่จักได้มีพระบรมรูปประดิษฐานไว้ที่วัดนี้ด้วยเช่นกัน จึงนำพระดำริปรึกษาผู้เกี่ยวข้องหลายท่านมีพระวรวงศ์เธอ กรมหมื่นพิทยลาภพฤฒิยากร เป็นต้น และต่อมาความทราบฝ่าละอองธุลีพระบาท ก็ได้ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ พระราช
