ประวัติวังเจ้าเมืองพัทลุง รัฐบาลและประชาชนชาวไทยได้ร่วมกันอนุรักษ์และพัฒนาโบราณสถาน วังเจ้าเมืองพัทลุงระหว่างปีพุทธศักราช 2531-2536 เพื่อเฉลิมพระเกียรติ สมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี เนื่องในวันอนุรักษ์มรดกไทย 2 เมษายน 2536 และเพื่อธำรงรักษามรดกวัฒนธรรมของชาติให้คงอยู่ยั่งยืนเป็นหลักฐานแสดงอารยธรรมของประเทศสืบไป สมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี ได้ทรงพระกรุณาเสด็จพระราชดำเนินเป็นองค์ประธาน ทรงประกอบพิธีเปิดวังเจ้าเมืองพัทลุง เมื่อวันที่ 16 สิงหาคม พุทธศักราช 2536

 วังเก่าสร้างขึ้นในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๕ เมื่อครั้งพระยาอภัยบริรักษ์ (น้อย จันทโรจวงศ์) ดำรงตำแหน่งเจ้าเมืองพัทลุง ระหว่างพุทธศักราช 2412 - 2431 สถานที่แห่งนี้จึงมีฐานะเป็นที่ว่าราชการเมืองพัทลุงเรื่อยมา จนกระทั่งพุทธศักราช 2431 พระอภัยบริรักษ์ กราบบังคมทูลลาออกจากราชการด้วยมีความชราภาพ และดวงตามืดมัวเนื่องจากโรคต้อกระจก พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว จึงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้เลื่อนขึ้นเป็นพระยาวรวุฒิไวยวัฒลุงควิสัยอิศรศักดิ์พิทักษ์ราชกิจนริศราชภักดีอภัยพิริยพาหะ จางวางเมืองพัทลุง พระยาวรวุฒิไวยฯ ยังคงพำนักอยู่ ณ วังแห่งนี้ต่อมา จนถึงแก่อนิจกรรมในพุทธศักราช 2446 วังแห่งนี้จึงเป็นมรดกตกทอดไปยังหลวงศรีวรวัตร (พิณ จันทโรจวงศ์) และทายาทตามลำดับ

 วังเก่ามีลักษณะเป็นเรือนไทยแฝดสามหลัง ยกใต้ถุนสูง จั่วขวางตะวัน เรือนหลังที่ 1 และ 2 ทำเป็นห้องนอน ด้านหน้าห้องนอนสร้างเป็นห้องโถงติดกัน ถัดออกไปเป็นชานขนาดเล็กต่อไปยังเรือนครัววัสดุก่อสร้างเป็นไม้ทั้งหมด วิธีการประกอบเรือนใช้ลูกสัก หรือลิ่มไม้เชื่อมยึดแทนตะปู

 หลังจากหมดการปกครองด้วยระบบเจ้าเมืองแล้ว วังเก่าก็อยู่ในสภาพชำรุดทรุดโทรม จนกระทั่งพุทธศักราช 2535 ทายาทของพระยาอภัยบริรักษ์ (น้อย จันทโรจวงศ์) ซึ่งถือครองกรรมสิทธิ์วังเก่าและที่ดิน ได้แก่ นางประไพ มุตตามระ นางสาวผอบ นะมาตร์ และนายธรรมนูญ จันทโรจวงศ์ ได้โอนกรรมสิทธิ์วังเก่าและที่ดินทั้งหมด ให้แก่แผ่นดิน โดยมีกรมศิลปากรเป็นผู้ดูแล เมื่อวันที่ 16 กรกฎาคม 2535
