ประวัติความเป็นมา
จังหวัดนครศรีธรรมราชนครศรีธรรมราช เป็นจังหวัดทางภาคใต้ของประเทศไทย มีการตั้งถิ่นฐานอาศัยมาตั้งแต่สมัยก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ และพัฒนาขึ้นมาเป็นลำดับ ได้มีการพบหลักฐานทางโบราณคดีหลายอย่าง เช่น เครื่องมือหินที่ถ้ำตาหมื่นยม กิ่งอำเภอช้างกลาง และกลองมโหระทึก ที่บ้านเกตุกาย ตำบลท่าเรือ อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดนครศรีธรรมราช เป็นต้น
ก่อนที่จะชื่อว่า “นครศรีธรรมราช” นั้น เมืองนี้มีชื่อปรากฏในเอกสารต่าง ๆ ทั้งของไทยและต่างชาติหลายชื่อ เช่น ตามพลิงคัม, ตัมพลิงคัม, ตัมพรลิงค, ตั้งมาหลิง, ตามโพลิงเกศวร, สิริธรรมนคร, ลิกอร์, ศรีธรรมราช, ปาฏลีบุตร เป็นต้น
ในสมัยประวัติศาสตร์นครศรีธรรมราช ได้พัฒนาขึ้นเป็นชุมชนขนาดใหญ่ เรียกว่า “ตามพรลิงค์” ภายใต้การปกครองของพระเจ้าศรีธรรมโศกราชในสมัยพุทธศตวรรษที่ 18 ซึ่งมีความเจริญสูงสุด ได้มีอำนาจครอบคลุมหัวเมืองรายรอบถึงสิบสองเมือง เรียกว่า “เมืองสิบสองนักษัตร” นครศรีธรรมราชจึงเป็นรัฐใหญ่ เป็นศูนย์การเผยแพร่พระพุทธศาสนา ศูนย์กลางการปกครองและศูนย์กลางประเพณี สมัยสุโขทัย นครศรีธรรมราชมีฐานะเป็นแคว้นอิสระที่สำคัญยิ่งในภาคใต้ ได้มีความสัมพันธ์ทางวัฒนธรรม ศาสนา และภาษาวรรณกรรมต่อกัน ครั้นสมัยอยุธยา นครศรีธรรมราชได้รวมเข้าเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของอาณาจักรอยุธยา มีฐานะเป็นหัวเมืองชั้นเอก และมีบทบาทสำคัญในการปกครองดูแลหัวเมืองต่าง ๆ ในภาคใต้ทั้งหมด
