ของจังหวัดสุรินทร์ในปัจจุบันเนืองจากเห็นว่าบริเวณดังกล่าวเป็นชัยภูมิที่เหมาะสมอย่างยิ่งมีกำแพงล้อมรอบถึง 2 ชั้น
มีน้ำอุดมสมบูรณ์เหมาะแก่การเพาะปลูกและเลี้ยงสัตว์ต่อมาหลวงสุรินทร์ภักดีได้กระทำความดีความชอบเป็นที่โปรดปราน
จึงได้ทรงกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯให้ยกบ้านคูประทายเป็น" เมืองประทายสมันต์ " และเลื่อนบรรดาศักดิ์หลวงสุรินทร์ภักดีเป็น
พระยาสุรินทร์ภักดีศรีณรงค์จางวาง
ในปี พุทรศักราช 2329 พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช ได้ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ
ให้เปลี่ยนชื่อ " เมืองประทายสมันต์ " เป็น " เมืองสุรินทร์ " ตามบรรดาศักดิ์ของเจาเมือง
ที่ตั้งของจังหวัด



จังหวัดสุรินทร์ ตั้งอยู่ภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ของประเทศไทย ระหว่างเส้นแวงที่ 103 องศา และ 105 องศาตะวันออก
และระหว่างเส้นรุ้งที่ 15 องศา และ องศาเหนือ ห่างจากกรุงเทพมหานครประมาณ 450 กิโลเมตร มีอาณาเขตติดต่อกับจังหวัดใกล้เคียง ดังนี้

จังหวัดสุรินทร์มีลำน้ำธรรมชาติที่สำคัญ 8 สายดังนี้คือ แม่นำมูล ลำน้ำชี ห้วยเสนง ลำห้วยพลับพลา ลำห้วยระวี ลำห้วยทับทัน ลำห้วยระหารและลำห้วยแก้ว เป็นลำน้ำที่ทำประโยชน์ให้แก่จังหวัดสุรินทร์ นอกจาก 8 แห่งนี้แล้ว ยังมีลำน้ำและหนองนำอีกมากมายกระจัดกระจายอยู่ในอำเภอต่างๆแต่แหล่งน้ำต่างๆดังกล่าวไม่สามารถอำนวยประโยชน์ให้แก่เกษตรกรได้มากนัก ในฤดูแล้งส่วนใหญ่น้ำจะแห้ง เว้นแต่ลำน้ำมูลซึ่งมีน้ำไหลตลอดปี
