ประวัติจังหวัดนครราชสีมา

นครราชสีมา เป็นเมืองใหม่ที่เกิดขึ้นจากเมืองเก่า 2 เมือง คือเมืองเสมาและ เมืองโคราฆะปุระ อันเป็นเมืองเก่าที่เคยเจริญรุ่งเรืองมาแต่สมัยขอมยังเป็นใหญ่อยู่บนแผ่นดินที่ราบสูงของอีสาน ปัจจุบันเมืองเก่าทั้งสองแห่งนี้ตั้งอยู่ริมฝั่งลำตะลองคนละฝากฝั่ง ในเขตท้องที่อำเภทสูงเนิน ทางด้านทิศตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ห่างจากตัวจังหวัดราชสีมาปัจจุบันประมาณ 31 กิโลเมตร
ต่อมาในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา รัชกาลสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราชโปรดสร้างเมืองใหม่ คือ เมืองนครราชสีมา ขึ้น ระหว่างปี ค.ศ.2199 – 2231 ซึ่งออกแบบสร้างเมืองใหม่อย่างแข็งแรง มีป้อมกำแพงเมือง ประตูสี่ด้าน ซึ่งนัยออกแบบโดยช่างชาวฝรั่งเศสที่มารับราชการอยู่ ณ เมืองลพบุรีในสมัยนั้น เมื่อสร้างเมืองใหม่แห่งนี้เสร็จแล้ว ก็อพพผู้คนจากเมืองเสมาและเมืองโคราฆะปุระมาอยู่เมืองใหม่นี้ ในสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวเมื่อทรงจัดการปกครองแบบมณฑลเทศาภิบาลนั้น นครราชสีมาเป็นที่ตั้งมณฑลลาวกลาง ซึ่งต่อมาได้เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น มณฑลนครราชสีมา จนถึงปี พ.ศ. 2476 นครราชสีมาจึงมีฐานะเป็นจังหวัดเรื่อยมา
