เมื่อวันก่อนมีมิตรรักถามครูอ้อยว่า...ตัวเป็นครูสอนภาษาอังกฤษ ช่วยวิเคราะห์หน่อยสิว่า...ทำไมนักเรียนไทยจึงเรียนภาษาอังกฤษตั้งหลายปี แต่ไม่ประสบกับความสำเร็จ

พอดีวันนี้ครูอ้อยเข้าเรียนหาข้อมูลการทบทวนวรรณกรรม จึงไปพบข้อความนี้ดีมาก จึงนำมาลงในบันทึกนี้ด้วย
สาเหตุที่ทำให้การเรียนการสอนภาษาอังกฤษในประเทศไทยไม่ประสบความสำเร็จ ทำให้คนไทยส่วนใหญ่พูดไม่ออก ฟังไม่รู้เรื่อง อ่านไม่เข้าใจและเขียนภาษาอังกฤษไม่ได้ มีดังนี้
1. มีความเชื่อผิด ๆ ที่ว่า ตนเองมีไวยากรณ์ที่ถูกต้องและเพียงพอแล้ว แต่ความเป็นจริงคือ ไวยากรณ์ที่มีอยู่อาจจะไม่ถูกต้อง ไม่เพียงพอ หรือมีไวยากรณ์เพียงพอแต่นำมาใช้ไม่เป็น
2. ข้อสอบเข้ามหาวิทยาลัยที่ใช้วัดระดับความรู้ทางภาษาอังกฤษไม่มีคุณภาพพอและไม่สามารถชี้นำให้นักศึกษาเรียนรู้เนื้อหาของการที่จะนำไปใช้ในการพูดการเขียนได้จริง ทำให้นักเรียนเข้าใจผิดว่า ตนเองรู้ภาษาอังกฤษโดยการตีความจากคะแนนสอบที่ออกมา แต่ในความเป็นจริงแล้ว ระดับคะแนนที่สูงมิได้เป็นตัวสะท้อนถึงความรู้ในการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษเลย เพราะมาตรฐานที่ใช้ประเมินยังไม่มีคุณภาพ
3. จากอดีตที่ผ่านมา การเรียนการสอนภาษาอังกฤษในประเทศไทยไม่เคยมีการสอนสำเนียงและวิธีการออกเสียงภาษาอังกฤษที่ถูกต้อง ทำให้เมื่อพูดแล้วฝรั่งฟังไม่รู้เรื่อง สาเหตุที่สอนไม่ได้เพราะผู้สอนเองก็ไม่รู้วิธีการออกเสียงที่ถูกต้องเช่นเดียวกัน
4. ไม่มีการสอนให้คิดอย่างเป็นระบบ และจูงใจคนฟังได้ ทำให้ในขณะที่พูดกับชาวต่างชาติ นอกจากสำเนียงจะฟังลำบากแล้ว เนื้อหาที่พูดยังไม่ชัดเจน ไม่น่าสนใจ และไม่น่าเชื่อถือเพราะไม่มีเหตุผลมาสนับสนุนในสิ่งที่พูด ในการเขียนก็เช่นเดียวกัน สังคมตะวันตกเน้นเหตุและผลเป็นหลัก การเขียนประเด็นต่าง ๆ ขึ้นมาลอย ๆ โดยไม่มีเหตุผลมาสนับสนุน หรือไม่มีการหักล้างประเด็นของฝ่ายตรงข้ามว่า อีกฝ่ายไม่มีเหตุไม่มีผลตรงจุดใด ถือว่าเป็นการยกประเด็นที่ฟังไม่ขึ้น หรือเป็นการโต้เถียงไปอย่างน้ำขุ่น ๆ
5. ไม่มีการสอนให้สร้างมโนภาพ เนื่องจากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาที่ต้องใช้มโนภาพเข้ามาเกี่ยวข้องในทุก ๆ ส่วน ทั้งพูด ฟัง อ่าน เขียน ดังนั้น การไม่มีมโนภาพจะทำให้การเรียนรู้ช้าและไม่เป็นระบบ
6. ไม่มีการสอนคำศัพท์ภาษาอังกฤษมากพอ หรือศัพท์ที่ใช้ได้จริงในชีวิตประจำวัน หรือสอนในลักษณะ Collocation เพื่อใช้เน้นเรื่องในการถ่ายทอดแนวความคิดออกมา
7. มีความเชื่อที่ผิด ๆ ว่า “ถ้าอยากพูดภาษาอังกฤษได้ จะต้องไปเรียนสนทนาภาษาอังกฤษ” การจะเรียนสนทนาภาษาอังกฤษนั้น ควรเรียนเมื่อเราพอมีพื้นฐานในด้านไวยากรณ์ภาษาอังกฤษที่ถูกต้องในระดับหนึ่ง และมีคำศัพท์เพียงพอในการพูดเสียก่อน การเรียนสนทนาตั้งแต่เริ่มต้นเพื่อฝึกพูดภาษาอังกฤษเป็นการเสียเวลา เพราะชาวต่างชาติมีวัฒนธรรมที่ว่า หากแก้ไขภาษาใครถือว่าเป็นการเสียมารยาท จึงพยายามเข้าใจในสิ่งที่เราพูดอยู่เสมอ ทำให้ผู้เรียนเข้าใจผิดว่าสิ่งที่พูดนั้นถูกต้อง และต้องใช้เวลานานในการเรียนรู้และซึมซับการใช้ภาษาที่ถูกต้องจริง ๆ ดังนั้น การเรียนสนทนาภาษาอังกฤษควรเรียนเพื่อให้เกิดความคุ้นเคย มีความชำนาญในการพูด และไม่เก้อเขินเมื่อต้องพูดคุยกับชาวต่างชาติ
