จังหวัดสกลนครตั้งอยู่บริเวณภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือตอนบน มีประวัติศาสตร์มายาวนาน ตั้งแต่สมัยก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ โดยมีการขุดพบฟอสซิลไดโนเสาร์บริเวณแนวทิวเขาภูพาน อำเภอวาริชภูมิ ภาพเขียนสีก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ ชุมชนโบราณในพื้นที่จังหวัดสกลนครอยู่ร่วมสมัยเดียวกับอารยธรรมบ้านเชียงในจังหวัดอุดรธานี จากการสำรวจแหล่งชุมชนโบราณในพื้นที่แอ่งสกลนคร บริเวณลุ่มแม่น้ำสงครามครอบคลุมพื้นที่บางส่วนของอำเภอบ้านดุง อำเภอหนองหาน จังหวัดอุดรธานี อำเภอสว่างแดนดิน อำเภอวาริชภูมิ อำเภอพังโคน อำเภอวานรนิวาส อำเภอพรรณานิคม และรอบ ๆ หนองหาร อำเภอเมืองสกลนคร พบแหล่งโบราณคดีก่อนประวัติศาสตร์จำนวน 83 แห่ง ชุมชนโบราณของแอ่งสกลนครนี้มีอายุประมาณ 600 ปีก่อนพุทธกาลจนถึงพุทธศตวรรษที่ 8 (ระหว่าง 3,000-1,800 ปีมาแล้ว) จากหลักฐานการค้นพบต่าง ๆ ของที่นี่พบว่า ชุมชนโบราณในแอ่งสกลนครได้มีการรวมตัวกันเป็นสังคมขนาดใหญ่และอาจจะพัฒนาเป็นสังคมเมืองในสมัยต่อมา

สกลนครเดิมชื่อ เมืองหนองหารหลวง แห่งอาณาจักรขอมโบราณ โดยขุนขอมราชบุตรเจ้าเมืองอินทปัฐนคร ซึ่งได้อพยพครอบครัวและบ่าวไพร่มาจากเมืองเขมร มาสร้างเมืองใหม่ที่ริมหนองหารหลวง บริเวณท่านางอาบ ปัจจุบันเรียกว่าท่าศาลา อำเภอโคกศรีสุพรรณ มีเจ้าปกครองเรื่อยมาจนสิ้นสมัยพระเจ้าสุวรรณภิงคาระ เมื่อเกิดฝนแล้งทำให้ราษฎรอพยพไปเมืองเขมร เมืองหนองหารหลวงจึงร้างอยู่ระยะหนึ่ง ครั้นถึงพุทธศตวรรษที่ 19 เมื่อสกลนครอยู่ภายใต้อิทธิพลของอาณาจักรล้านช้าง จึงได้เปลี่ยนชื่อเมืองเป็น "เชียงใหม่หนองหาร" หรือเมืองสระหลวงหลังจากนั้นเมืองสกลนคร คงอยู่ใต้การปกครองกันไปมา ระหว่างอาณาจักรล้านช้างกับอาณาจักรสุโขทัย และไม่ค่อยมีบทบาททางประวัติศาสตร์ที่โดดเด่นนัก จนมาถึงสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา ผู้คนกระจัดกระจายเป็นชุมชนเล็กๆทำมาหากินตามริมหนองหาร จ่ายส่วย อากรให้เจ้าแขวงประเทศราชศรีโคตรบอง เพื่อถวายต้นไม้เงิน ต้นไม้ทองให้แก่ราชธานีกรุงศรีอยุธยาในสมัยนั้น
