ประวัติวัด

วัดทรงศิลา พระอารามหลวง ตั้งอยู่ที่บ้านหินตั้ง ตำบลในเมือง อำเภอเมืองชัยภูมิ จังหวัดชัยภูมิ เป็นวัดราษฎร์มาแต่เดิม จากประวัติจังหวัดชัยภูมิ และตามพงศาวดารกรุงเทพฯ จ.ศ. ๑๒๒๕ กล่าวถึงบ้านหินตั้งไว้ว่า ...เมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๔๐๖ (จ.ศ.๑๒๒๕) พระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้หลวงวิเศษภักดี (ที) บุตรพระยาภักดีชุมพล (แล) เป็นพระภักดีชุมพล ดำรงตำแหน่งเจ้าเมืองชัยภูมิ ให้หลวงยกกระบัตร (บุญจันทร์) เป็นหลวงปลัด ให้หลวงขจรนพคุณ เป็นหลวงยกกระบัตร ประกาศให้ราษฎรที่อพยพโยกย้ายไปประกอบอาชีพในถิ่นต่างๆ กลับคืนสู่ถิ่นเดิม...ในสมัยพระภักดีชุมพล (ที) เป็นเจ้าเมืองชัยภูมินั้น พิจารณาเห็นได้ว่า บ้านหินตั้ง (ที่ตั้งเมืองชัยภูมิปัจจุบัน) เป็นที่ทำเลกว้างขวางมีชัยภูมิดี จึงได้ย้ายเมืองจากโนนปอปิด (บริเวณปรางค์กู่กับหนองบัวเมืองเก่า) มาตั้งเมืองใหม่ที่บ้านหินตั้ง และอยู่มาจนทุกวันนี้ พระภักดีชุมพล (ที) รับราชการสนองพระเดชพระคุณด้วยความเรียบร้อยเป็นเวลาได้ ๑๒ ปี ก็ถึงแก่อนิจกรรมเมื่อถือตามคตินี้ ถือได้ว่าบ้านหินตั้งมีมานานแล้ว วัดทรงศิลา เดิมเรียกชื่อวัดตามชื่อหมู่บ้านว่า วัดหินตั้ง สันนิษฐานว่าได้สร้างในสมัยของพระภักดีชุมพล (ที) ในระหว่างปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๐๒ - ๒๔๑๘ ต่อมา พ.ศ. ๒๔๔๐ พระหฤทัย (บัว) เจ้าเมืองชัยภูมิ ได้เปลี่ยนชื่อวัดหินตั้งเป็นภาษาทันสมัยว่า วัดทรงศิลา ซึ่งแปลตามตัวอักษร ก็แปลว่า หินตั้ง นั่นเอง นี้เป็นการสันนิษฐานจากเรื่องราวในพงศาวดาร และปัจจุบันก็ได้ยึดเอาปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๑๘ เป็นปี พ.ศ. ตั้งวัดทรงศิลา เพื่อประกอบการขึ้นทะเบียนวัดสังกัดสำนักงานพระพุทธศาสนาแห่งชาติ
