จังหวัดยโสธร เป็นจังหวัดในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือตอนล่างของประเทศไทย นับเป็นเสมือนด่านผ่านระหว่างอีสานตอนบนกับอีสานตอนล่าง และเป็นทางผ่านไปยังจังหวัดอุบลราชธานี และ จังหวัดอำนาจเจริญ จัดตั้งโดยคณะปฏิวัติของจอมพลถนอม กิตติขจร ตาม ประกาศของคณะปฏิวัติ ฉบับที่ 70 ลงวันที่ 6 กุมภาพันธ์ 2515 อันให้แยกอำเภอยโสธร อำเภอกุดชุม อำเภอเลิงนกทา อำเภอคำเขื่อนแก้ว อำเภอมหาชนะชัย และอำเภอป่าติ้ว ออกจากจังหวัดอุบลราชธานี แล้วรวมกันตั้งเป็นจังหวัดยโสธร และมีผลใช้บังคับตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 มีนาคม 2515 สืบไป

ทั้งนี้ จังหวัดยโสธรเดิมเป็นหมู่บ้านเรียกว่า บ้านสิงห์ท่า ต่อมาใน พ.ศ. 2357 พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธเลิศหล้านภาลัยทรงยกฐานะเป็นเมืองยโสธร มีฐานะเป็นเมืองประเทศราช ขึ้นตรงต่อกรุงเทพฯ ถึง พ.ศ. 2443 รวมเข้าอยู่ในบริเวณอุบลราชธานีจนถึง พ.ศ. 2450 เมื่อยุบบริเวณอุบลราชธานี จัดตั้งเป็นจังหวัดอุบลราชธานี จึงเป็นอำเภอในจังหวัดอุบลราชธานี กระทั่งมีประกาศของคณะปฏิวัติดังกล่าว
