วิธีป้องกัน
1. คุยกับเด็กเพื่อกำหนดกติกากันล่วงหน้าก่อนจะซื้อเกม หรืออนุญาตให้เด็กเล่นว่า เด็กสามารถเล่นเกมได้ในวันใดบ้าง วันใดเล่นไม่ได้ เล่นได้ครั้งละไม่เกินกี่ชั่วโมง ตั้งแต่เวลาใดถึงเวลาใด ก่อนจะเล่นต้องรับผิดชอบทำอะไรให้เสร็จเรียบร้อยก่อนบ้าง หากเด็กไม่รักษากติกา เช่น เล่นเกินเวลา ไม่ทำการบ้านให้เสร็จก่อน ฯลฯ เด็กจะถูกทำโทษอย่างไร (แนะนำให้ใช้วิธีริบเกม หรือตัดสิทธิการเล่นเป็นเวลาระยะหนึ่งหากเด็กไม่ทำตามกติกาที่ตกลง)
2. วางตำแหน่งคอมพิวเตอร์หรือเครื่องเล่นเกมในสถานที่ที่เป็นที่โล่ง มีคนเดินผ่านไปผ่านมาบ่อยๆ ไม่ควรตั้งไว้ในห้องนอนหรือห้องที่ปิดมิดชิด เพื่อที่ผู้ปกครองจะได้ติดตามเฝ้าดูได้ เป็นการป้องกันมิให้เด็กเก็บตัว แอบเล่นคนเดียวในห้อง หรือแอบเล่นทั้งคืน

6. ส่งเสริม จัดหากิจกรรมที่สนุกสนานอย่างอื่น (ที่สนุกพอๆกับ/หรือมากกว่าการเล่นเกม) ให้เด็กทำ หรือมีกิจกรรมที่ทำร่วมกันในครอบครัว
7. หลีกเลี่ยงการใช้เกมเป็นเสมือนพี่เลี้ยงเด็ก เพื่อที่พ่อแม่จะได้มีเวลาส่วนตัวไปทำอย่างอื่น
8. สอนให้เด็กรู้จักการแบ่งเวลา รู้จักใช้เวลาอย่างเหมาะสม
