ออสเตรียเป็นประเทศสหพันธรัฐที่ประกอบด้วย 9 รัฐ (states - Bundesländer) รัฐเหล่านี้แบ่งเขตการปกครองย่อยออกเป็น เขต (districts - Bezirke) และ นคร (cities - Statutarstädte) ซึ่งในเขตแต่ละแห่งยังแบ่งออกเป็นเทศบาล (municipalities- Gemeinden)
