มีการจัดตั้งองค์การความร่วมมือทางเศรษฐกิจขึ้นในภูมิภาค ขึ้นในปี พ.ศ. 2510 โดยในระยะแรกมีสมาชิกก่อตั้งเพียง 5 ประเทศเท่านั้น ได้แก่ ไทย อินโดนีเซีย ฟิลิปปินส์ มาเลเซีย และ สิงคโปร์ จนต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2527 ประเทศบรูไนดารุสซาลามได้เข้าร่วมเป็นสมาชิกเป็นประเทศที่หก และมีเวียดนาม ลาว พม่า และ กัมพูชา เข้ามาเป็นสมาชิกตามลำดับต่อมา..
สัญลักษณ์ของอาเซียน คือ ต้นข้าวสีเหลือง 10 ต้นมัดรวมกันไว้ หมายถึงประเทศสมาชิกรวมกันเพื่อมิตรภาพ และความเป็นน้ำหนึ่งใจเดียวกัน สีน้ำเงิน หมายถึง สันติภาพ และความมั่นคง สีแดง หมายถึง ความกล้าหาญ และความก้าวหน้า สีขาว หมายถึง ความบริสุทธิ์ และสีเหลือง หมายถึง ความเจริญรุ่งเรือง
