ความเป็นมาทางประวัติศาสตร์
"จังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี" เป็นจังหวัดเก่าแก่จังหวัดหนึ่ง อยู่ทางภาคตะวันตกของประเทศไทย มีอายุถึงยุคหินใหม่ ประมาณ 3,500-4,000 ปี สืบต่อเนื่องกันเรื่อยมาจนถึงยุคสัมฤทธิ์และเหล็กอายุราว 2,500 ปี ล่วงเข้าสู่ยุคสุวรรณภูมิ ฟูนัน อมรวดี ทวารวดี ลพบุรี อู่ทอง อยุธยา และปัจจุบันนี้โบราณวัตถุ โบราณสถานที่พบเป็นประจักษ์พยานบ่งบอกว่าจังหวัดสุพรรณฯ มีอายุสูงถึงยุคหินใหม่จริง ไม่เพียงเท่านั้นจังหวัดสุพรรณบุรียังเป็นเมืองพุทธศาสนาอีกด้วย จากการขุดค้นพบพุทธปฎิมากรรมทั่วทั้งจังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี จากสถิติพบไม่น้อยกว่า 140-150 ครั้ง ตั้งแต่สมัยอมราวดีเป็นต้นมา ทำให้สันนิษฐานได้ว่าจังหวัดสุพรรณบุรีเป็นเมืองที่พุทธศาสนาฝังรากไว้อย่างหนาแน่น ไม่น้อยกว่า 2,300 ปี มาแล้ว ราว พ.ศ. 70 -80

เมืองสุพรรณบุรี ดินแดนแห่งความอุดมสมบูรณ์บนพื้นที่ราบภาคกลางสืบสานความเจริญรุ่งเรืองมาตั้งแต่อดีตเมื่อ พ.ศ. 1420 จากนามเดิมเมืองพันธุมบุรีในยุคทวารวดีตามหลักฐานทางโบราณคดีได้จารึกชื่อไว้ในพงศาวดารเหนือ และนาม "สุพรรณภูมิ" ปรากฏในศิลาจารึกพ่อขุนรามคำแหงมหาราช ระบุว่าเป็นนครรัฐที่มีความสำคัญมาก่อนกรุงศรีอยุธยา เมื่อมีการสถาปนากรุงศรีอยุธยา เมืองสุพรรณบุรีจึงจัดอยู่ในฐานะเมืองลูกหลวงซึ่งเป็นเมืองอู่ข้าวอู่น้ำที่สำคัญอีกด้วย

ในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยาเป็นราชธานี เมืองสุพรรณบุรีเป็นเมืองหน้าด่านและเป็นเมืองอู่ข้าวอู่น้ำที่สำคัญ ต้องผ่านศึกสงครามหลายต่อหลายครั้ง สภาพเมืองตลอดจนโบราณสถานถูกทำลายเหลือเพียงซากปรักหักพัง จนกระทั่งถึงสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ เมืองสุพรรณบุรีได้ฟื้นตัวขึ้นใหม่ และตั้งอยู่บนฝั่งตะวันออกของแม่น้ำท่าจีน (ลำน้ำสุพรรณ) มาจนตราบทุกวันนี้

ตั้งแต่สมัยโบราณมีคติถือกันโดยเคร่งครัดต่อกันมาว่า "ห้ามมิให้เจ้านายเสด็จไปเมืองสุพรรณ" แต่จะห้ามมาแต่ครั้งใดและด้วยเหตุผลประการใดนั้นไม่มีผู้สามารถจะตอบได้ จนกระทั่งถึงต้นรัชกาลที่ 5 ก็ยังคงถือกันเป็นประเพณีอยู่เช่นนี้เรื่อยมา เมื่อสมเด็จกรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพ ดำรงตำแหน่งเสนาบดีกระทรวงมหาดไทย จะเสด็จไปตรวจราชการที่เมืองนี้ พระยาอ่างทองยังทูลห้ามไว้ โดยถวายเหตุผลว่า เทพารักษ์หลักเมืองไม่ชอบเจ้านาย ถ้าเสด็จไปมักจะทำให้เกิดอันตรายต่างๆ แต่สมเด็จกรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพไม่ทรงเชื่อ ทรงขืนเสด็จไปเมืองสุพรรณบุรีเป็นพระองค์แรก เพื่อจะทรงตรวจราชการที่เมืองนี้ ควรจะช่วย เหลือให้ความสะดวกอย่างไร หรือควรทำนุบำรุงบ้านเมืองให้เจริญรุ่งเรืองยิ่งขึ้นอย่างไร ไม่ใช่การไปทำความชั่ว เทพารักษ์ประจำเมืองคงจะไม่ให้โทษเป็นแน่ เมื่อเสด็จกลับจากตรวจราชการครั้งนั้นแล้ว ก็ไม่ทรงได้รับภยันตรายประการใด เจ้านายพระองค์อื่นทรงเห็นเช่นนั้นก็ทรงเลิกเชื่อถือคติโบราณ และเริ่มเสด็จประภาสกันต่อมาเนืองๆ

ครั้นเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2447 พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว เสด็จประพาสเมือง สุพรรณอีกครั้งหนึ่ง ตั้งแต่นั้นเป็นมาก็ไม่มีผู้ใดพูดถึงคติที่ห้ามเจ้านายมิให้เสด็จไปเมือง สุพรรณอีกเลย ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 เมื่อมีการปกครองมณฑลเทศาภิบาล เมืองสุพรรณก็รวมอยู่ในมณฑลนครชัยศรี ซึ่งประกอบด้วย เมืองนครชัยศรี สุพรรณบุรี และสมุทรสาคร ในปี พ.ศ. 2438 จนกระทั่งในปี พ.ศ. 2456 มีการเปลี่ยนชื่อเมืองมาเป็นจังหวัด เมืองสุพรรณบุรีจึงเป็นจังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี ตั้งแต่นั้นมา ...
