ประวัติกีฬาวอลเลย์บอล

กีฬาวอลเลย์บอลกำเนิดขึ้นในปี ค.ศ. 1895 โดยชาวอเมริกานชื่อ นายวิลเลียม จี มอร์แกน (Mr. William G. Morgan) ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ที่เมืองโฮลโยก (Holyoke) มลรัฐแมสซาซูเซทส์ (Massachusetts) โดยได้ดัดแปลงมาจากกีฬา3 ชนิด คือ เทนนิส เบสบอล และแฮนด์บอลประยุกต์เข้าด้วยกัน อุปกรณ์

ก) การเริ่มเล่น ให้ผู้ที่ได้ส่งลูกของข้างใดข้างหนึ่งเป็นผู้ส่งลูก และละคนมีสิทธิส่งลูก 2 ครั้ง ติดต่อกัน ไม่ว่าฝ่ายส่งจะเสียหรือฝ่ายตรงข้ามจะเสียก็ตาม
ข) เกมหนึ่งประกอบไปด้วย 9อินนิง (inning) ถ้าฝ่ายใดแพ้ 3 อินนิง ให้ปรับเป็นฝ่ายแพ้
ค) ผู้เล่นแต่ละคนของแต่ละฝ่าย พยายามตีลูกบอลโต้ให้ลอยข้ามตาข่ายไปมา และไม่กำหนดจำนวนผู้เล่นที่แน่นอน จะเล่นข้างละกี่คนก็ได้ แต่ให้จำนวนเท่ากัน

ต่อมาในปี ค.ศ. 1954 ในการแข่งขันกีฬาเอเซียนเกมส์ ครั้งที่ 2 ที่ประเทศอินเดีย ยังไม่มีการแข่งขันวอลเลย์บอล แต่ได้มีการแข่งขันวอลเลย์บอลชิงแชมป์เอเชีย แทนการแข่งขันวอลเลย์บอล
ในเอเซียนเกมส์ ครั้งที่ 2
ปี ค.ศ. 1958 ได้เริ่มมีการแข่งขันกีฬาวอลเลย์บอล ในการแข่งขันเอเซียนเกมส์ ครั้งที่ 3
