เมื่อวันที่ 13 ธันวาคม 2557 ผู้สื่อข่าวรายงานว่า ผู้นำอาเซียนประกาศเลื่อนเปิดประชาคมเศรษฐกิจอาเซียน หรือ AEC ออกไปอีก 12 เดือน เป็นวันที่ 31 ธันวาคม 2558 เพราะยังมีขั้นตอนและข้อตกลงอีกหลายอย่างที่ไม่สามารถตกลงกันได้
