คำว่า e-Learning คือ การเรียน การสอนในลักษณะ หรือรูปแบบใดก็ได้ ซึ่งการถ่ายทอดเนื้อหานั้น กระทำผ่านทางสื่ออิเล็กทรอนิกส์ เช่น ซีดีรอม เครือข่ายอินเทอร์เน็ต อินทราเน็ต เอ็กซทราเน็ต หรือ ทางสัญญาณโทรทัศน์ หรือ สัญญาณดาวเทียม (Satellite) ฯลฯ เป็นต้น ซึ่งการเรียนลักษณะนี้ได้มีการนำเข้าสู่ตลาดเมืองไทยในระยะหนึ่งแล้ว เช่น คอมพิวเตอร์ช่วยสอนด้วยซีดีรอม, การเรียนการสอนบนเว็บ (Web-Based Learning), การเรียนออนไลน์ (On-line Learning) การเรียนทางไกลผ่านดาวเทียม หรือ การเรียนด้วยวีดีโอผ่านออนไลน์ เป็นต้น
ในปัจจุบัน คนส่วนใหญ่มักจะใช้คำว่า e-Learning กับการเรียน การสอน หรือการอบรม ที่ใช้เทคโนโลยีของเว็บ (Web Based Technology) ในการถ่ายทอดเนื้อหา รวมถึงเทคโนโลยีระบบการจัดการหลักสูตร (Course Management System) ในการบริหารจัดการงานสอนด้านต่างๆ โดยผู้เรียนที่เรียนด้วยระบบ e-Learning นี้สามารถศึกษาเนื้อหาในลักษณะออนไลน์ หรือ จากแผ่นซีดี-รอม ก็ได้ และที่สำคัญอีกส่วนคือ เนื้อหาต่างๆ ของ e-Learning สามารถนำเสนอโดยอาศัยเทคโนโลยีมัลติมีเดีย (Multimedia Technology) และเทคโนโลยีเชิงโต้ตอบ (Interactive Technology)
คำว่า e-Learning นั้นมีคำที่ใช้ได้ใกล้เคียงกันอยู่หลายคำเช่น Distance Learning (การเรียนทางไกล) Computer based training (การฝึกอบรมโดยอาศัยคอมพิวเตอร์ หรือเรียกย่อๆว่า CBT) online learning (การเรียนทางอินเตอร์เนต) เป็นต้น ดังนั้น สรุปได้ว่า ความหมายของ e-Learning คือ รูปแบบของการเรียนรู้ด้วยตนเอง โดยอาศัยเครือข่ายคอมพิวเตอร์ หรือสื่ออิเลคทรอนิกส์ในการถ่ายทอดเรื่องราว และเนื้อหา โดยสามารถมีสื่อในการนำเสนอบทเรียนได้ตั้งแต่ 1 สื่อขึ้นไป และการเรียนการสอนนั้นสามารถที่จะอยู่ในรูปของการสอนทางเดียว หรือการสอนแบบปฎิสัมพันธ์ได้
