         สาเหตุของการเกิดแผ่นดินไหว

         ทฤษฎีว่าด้วยการขยายตัวของเปลือกโลก โดยแผ่นดินไหวเกิดจากการที่เปลือกโลกเกิดการคดโค้ง โก่งตัวอย่างฉับพลัน และเมื่อวัตถุขาดออกจากกันจึงปลดปล่อยพลังงานออกมาในรูปคลื่นแผ่นดินไหว
 
         ทฤษฎีว่าด้วยการคืนตัวของวัตถุ โดยแผ่นดินไหวมาจากการเคลื่อนตัวของรอยเลื่อน กล่าวคือ เมื่อรอยเลื่อนเกิดการเคลื่อนตัวถึงจุดหนึ่งวัตถุจะขาดออกจากกันและเสียรูปอย่างมาก พร้อมทั้งปลดปล่อยพลังงานมหาศาลออกมาในรูปของคลื่นแผ่นดินไหว และหลังจากนั้นวัตถุจะคืนตัวกลับสู่รูปเดิม
