มีตำนานเล่าว่า ในสมัยก่อนเมื่อประมาณ 200 ปีล่วงมาแล้ว ที่บริเวณตอนเหนือของวัดทับมาในปัจจุบันนี้ บริเวณนี้สมัยก่อนเรียกว่า "เขตถ้ำม้า" ได้ปรากฏมีถ้ำลับแลอยู่ โดยในวันฤกษ์ดีคืนดีจะมีถ้ำปรากฏให้เห็นตอนดึกๆ และจะมีม้าขาววิ่งออกมาจากถ้ำสวยงามมาก ในเวลากลางวันก็กลับกลายสภาพบริเวณเป็นที่ว่างเปล่าตามปกติ ชาวบ้านที่อาศัยอยู่ในแถบบริเวณนี้ถ้าต้องการข้าวของเครื่องใช้อะไร ก็จะจุดเทียนธูปบอกกล่าวไว้เพื่อขออนุญาตหยิบยืมไปใช้ในงาน ก็จะปรากฏมีข้าวของเครื่องใช้ให้หยิบยืมได้ตามต้องการ และเมื่อเวลาเสร็จงานเรียบร้อยแล้วก็ต้องนำข้าวของเครื่องใช้ไปคืนให้ตามที่เคยบอกกล่าวไว้ ได้ปฏิบัติกันเช่นนี้เรื่อยๆ มา จนกระทั่งวันหนึ่งก็ได้มีชาวบ้านคนหนึ่งไม่ได้ปฏิบัติตามสัญญา คือได้สับเปลี่ยนข้าวของเครื่องใช้ บ้างก็ว่านำไปคืนไม่ครบบ้าง ถ้ำม้านี้ก็ไม่ปรากฏอะไรให้เห็นอีกเลย จะมีก็แต่ผู้คนสัญจรไปมา (โดยมากจะใช้ม้าเป็นพาหนะ) ก็จะพาม้ามาพักไว้บริเวณแถวนี้ จึงได้เพี้ยนภาษา จากถ้ำม้าเป็นทัพม้า และเรียกเพี้ยนมาเป็น "ทับมา" จนกระทั่งถึงปัจจุบัน
