เขตบางแคในอดีตเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของอำเภอหนองแขม จังหวัดธนบุรี มีชื่อว่า ตำบลหลักหนึ่ง ภายหลังเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น ตำบลบางแค[2] ตามชื่อคลองสายหนึ่งที่ไหลผ่านพื้นที่และหมู่บ้านที่ตั้งอยู่ริมคลองนั้น ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2472 สำนักนายกรัฐมนตรีได้ยุบอำเภอหนองแขมมาขึ้นกับอำเภอภาษีเจริญ[3] แต่ในช่วงแรกตำบลบางแคยังคงเป็นท้องที่ปกครองของกิ่งอำเภอหนองแขมอยู่ จนกระทั่งในปี พ.ศ. 2473 ทางการจึงโอนตำบลนี้มาขึ้นกับอำเภอภาษีเจริญโดยตรง เนื่องจากอยู่ใกล้กันและติดต่อกันได้สะดวกกว่า[4]
