ศูนย์ศึกษาการพัฒนาห้วยฮ่องไคร้ อันเนื่องมาจากพระราชดำริ อำเภอดอยสะเก็ด จังหวัดเชียงใหม่แห่งนี้ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้พระราชทานพระราชดำริเมื่อวันที่ ๑๑ ธันวาคม ๒๕๒๕ ให้พิจารณาจัดตั้งขึ้นบริเวณป่าขุนแม่กวง อำเภอดอยสะเก็ด จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ขอบเขตพื้นที่โครงการประมาณ ๘,๕๐๐ ไร่ โดยมีพระราชประสงค์ที่จะให้เป็นศูนย์กลางในการศึกษา ทดลอง วิจัย เพื่อหารูปแบบการพัฒนาต่าง ๆ ในบริเวณพื้นที่ต้นน้ำที่เหมาะสมและเผยแพร่ให้ราษฎรนำไปปฎิบัติต่อไป โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งการพัฒนาพื้นที่ต้นน้ำลำธาร ซึ่งศูนย์ศึกษากาพัฒนาห้วยฮ่องไคร้ อันเนื่องมาจากพระราชดำริ จะทำการศึกษาการพัฒนาป่าไม้พื้นที่ต้นน้ำลำธาร ให้ได้ผลอย่างสมบูรณ์เป็นหลักต้นทางปลายทางเป็นการศึกษาการประมงตามอ่างเก็บน้ำต่าง ๆ ที่จะก่อให้เกิดประโยชน์ต่อราษฎรอย่างแท้จริง ผสมกับการศึกษาด้านการเกษตรกรรม ด้านปศุสัตว์และโคนมและด้านเกษตรอุตสาหกรรม เพื่อให้เป็นศูนย์ที่สมบูรณ์แบบ ก่อให้เกิดประโยชน์ต่อราษฎรที่จะเข้ามาศึกษากิจกรรมต่างๆ ภายในศูนย์ฯ แล้วนำไปใช้ปฎิบัติอย่างได้ผลต่อไป ดังมีพระราชดำริว่าให้ศูนย์ศึกษาการพัฒนาฯ ทำหน้าที่เสมือน "พิพิธภัณฑ์ธรรมชาติที่มีชีวิต" หรืออีกนัยหนึ่งเป็น "สรุปผลของการพัฒนา" ที่ประชาชนจะเข้าไปเรียนรู้และนำไปปฎิบัติได้
วัตถุประสงค์ของศูนย์
เพื่อจัดตั้งศูนย์ศึกษาการพัฒนา อันเนื่องมาจากพระราชดำริ สำหรับภาคเหนือในบริเวณพื้นที่ต้นน้ำห้วยฮ่องไคร้ อำเภอดอยสะเก็ด จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ขอบเขตพื้นที่โครงการประมาณ ๘,๕๐๐ ไร่ เพื่อเป็นศูนย์กลางในการอบรม และเผยแพร่การศึกษาให้แก่ส่วนราชการแลเกษตรทั่วไป โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการพัฒนาด้านต่าง ๆ ดังนี้
