ไม่ว่าจะเป็นอดีต ปัจจุบันหรืออนาคต ครูย่อมมีความสำคัญต่อสังคม ประเทศชาติและแม้แต่โลกกล่าวคือ ตราบใดที่สังคมมนุษย์ยังสามารถผลิตสมาชิกใหม่ให้สังคม ความต้องการครูก็จะยังมีอยู่ตลอดไปมีข้อจำกัดอยู่แต่เพียงในเรื่องจำนวนและความสามารถของครูในด้านต่างๆทั้งนี้เพราะปัจจุบันโลกได้พัฒนาไปมากเช่นเดียวกัน ดังนั้นความต้องการใช้ครูจึงต้องให้สอดคล้องกับความต้องการของสังคมด้วย

ไม่ว่าครูจะมีความรู้ความสามารถหรือความถนัดแตกต่างกันเพียงใด แต่บทบาทของครูโดยส่วนรวมแล้ว จะยังอยู่ในลักษณะเดียวกัน กล่าวคือ นอกจากครูจะต้องรักบทบาทเป็นผู้สอนคนให้มีความรู้ความสามารถทางด้านวิชาการต่างๆ แล้ว ครูยังจะต้องรับบทบาทในการพัฒนาประเทศชาติในด้านต่างๆอีก เช่นการพัฒนาสังคม การเมือง เศรษฐกิจ ศาสนาและวัฒนธรรม เป็นต้น ดังนั้น ครูจึงต้องรับบทหนักทั้งในอดีตและปัจจุบัน และเป็นบทบาทในการสร้างสังคมในด้านต่างๆให้มีความเจริญก้าวหน้า จนกระทั่งในปัจจุบันนี้ได้มีผู้ให้สมญานามแก่ครูว่าเป็น วิศวกรสังคม ซึ่งหมายถึง ช่างผู้ชำนาญในการสร้างสังคมนั่นคือ หากครูให้การศึกษาแก่สมาชิกแก่สังคมอย่างไร สังคมก็จะเป็นอย่างนั้น เช่น ให้การศึกษาเรื่องระบอบประชาธิปไตยอย่างถูกต้อง สังคมก็จะเป็นประชาธิปไตย หากครูให้การศึกษาในระบอบอื่นสังคมก็จะเป็นเช่นนั้นด้วย
